    Default Ultra light reels

Last yr I bought 2 new G loomis rods a 6'8" lite and a 6'7" ultra lite , due to family issues I never fished them. Today to my shock I find I have 4 G loomis rods & 2 st croix rods and only 2 reels that fit them size wise , after researching on line I am more confused then ever , stradic , JDM ballistic FW LT , or maybe a pflueger product? I have 1 6725 president and and 750 sedona that are good to go but nothing else. I want a small reel under 7oz if possible , it should take no more then 100yds of 6lb test , with smooth drag and tight lock up and a slower ratio maybe 4.8 or 5.2 at most , I mainly flip plastics around docks or top water plugs. live bait once and a while the following is a list of rods i need reels for....any help will be appreciated ...thanks much ....Jay

    G loomis 5'6" ultra lite 2/6lb
st croix 5'6" utra lite 2/4lb
    G loomis 6'7" ultra lite 2/3lb
    G loomis 6'8" lite 4/8lb
    G loomis 7' lite 4/8lb
st croix 7' ultra lite 2/6lbs

Oh I should also state I am willing to spend up to $300 on a reel though at that price wont be buying more then couple of them & will just have to out fit as time and $$$ allow

Take a look under the Panfish, Bream forum and look at the JDM reels sticky post. If you are willing to spend $300 per reel, you may want to look at the Japanese Direct Market Reels. Now I have to apologize for sending you down this road the JDM stuff I have bought is expensive but seems to be worth it.. Read up and see what you think.

Your good. It won’t take you long to figure out how to navigate the site. And just about anyone will help if you just ask. That’s best thing about this site.

First off welcome to the Board. That is an impressive list of UL weapons, you did not specify targeted species but I am assuming Crappie/Panfish varietals. For your listed applications, the shallow spools that are found on most if not all JDM reels would be sufficient. USDM reels (while mainly made overseas) have the larger capacity and deeper spools, is that much line really necessary as I always just used a backing on all my spinning reels, no matter the size, and changed out the last 35-50 yards when needed. Diawa and Shimano seem to be the two main players in the JDM reel market, and I am afraid it is a Ford/Chevy type deal, the best is always the one you own, and try to justify to others as to why. The Shimano Stradic Ci4 seems to have a big following in my area, lots of the Bass guys use them in the middle sizes and love them, they have a JDM UL version also. I personally like the specs on the Shimano Cardiff Ci4, and would love to get my hands on the Shimano Vanquish, but probably never will. That said, I do have a couple Diawa JDM models, the Luvias, the Ballistic FW LT and the Gekabijin MX LT. The Luvias is probably considered an industry standard, made in Japan and tried and true...and affordable. I have 2 2015 models 1000 series, and I swear they get smoother the more I use them. Diawa came out with the 2020 model of the Luvias this year and she weighs in at 160g I think, about 5.7 ounces. Only available in the 2000 size, the first production run has already sold out. The JDM Ballistic FW LT is available in the 1000 size, is a little cheaper when you catch it on sale and weighs in about the same. I own one but have not used it yet. A couple people over on the Panfish board use them also and have put some seat time on them and really like the reel. Check out Trout Magnet Man on You Tube, he has a wealth of information on the two above mentioned Diawa reels, and you will get to see some fish caught with them and hear the drag :-). Good luck on your research and choices, those UL and L rods should be a lot of fun to fish with.

Yes I should have stated crappie are my target fish, thought with the lite rods i will use them for jigging 4 walleye or small mouth in summer.I view panfishing like bird hunting yes I can kill a dove with a 12ga auto....but why when a 28ga o/u is with in my reach

I have two G loomis 5'4" with the Tennessee handles i use the Shimano 500 on them. But the small Pflugers are great on them also. I hunt Quail and dove with Winchester o/u in 410.
