long line trolling

Do any of you long line troll with roadrunners? We used to do it all the time when I was a kid and would fish with my grandparents... Anyhow, wondering what speed you usually pull them at if so?

We did some experimenting last year with and w/out them and the road runners caught at least 3 to 1. We were around .6-1.0 mph ,seemed like each day was different.

I would think that speed would be determined by the depth you wanted the Road Runner to be ... the length of line out being used ... and whether or not added weight was used ... the weight of the Road Runner being used ... and the actual Road Runner makeup (just marabou, curly tail, or Slabalicious body on the RR jighead).

I sometimes drag a single Road Runner (1/16oz marabou) on 40-50ft of line out and at a speed of ~0.5mph (pre-spawn to post spawn period mainly) and estimate its running depth at 6-8ft. (actually all these numbers are estimates except the weight of the RR). I've even been known to do this in early Summer along banks that are still in the shade. I do this technique mainly when running from spot to spot along a bank that has good cover spots that are widely scattered (in distance) down that bank.
I also plan on using Road Runners more often in my spread when I'm Pushing (w/1oz weights @ 1mph) just to see if they outproduce any of the other offerings, overall.

Road Runners work long line trolling and pushing them.
This time of year with muddy stained waters l will push double RR rigged with a 1 1/2 oz drop shot weight up to 1 mph.
The blade attracts the bite.

They work great, I use the 1/32oz mostly, with a split shot or 2 above for the depth, I need.

I’ve been trying it since early February, and have yet to get a bite with trolling. Going through areas that usually produce. But not working so far this year. Water temps are still sub 50° in my area tho

We always have road runners on long lining or pushing. Seems to catch more fish than standard jig heads for the most part.

I use them a lot over emergent weed beds with many bonus fish Pike, Walleyes, Perch, Bass, and of course Crappie . One of our favorite techniques when the weeds are so thick they cannot be fished thru the weeds but do not reach the surface we run them over the top of the weeds..

Some days theu catch more and some days they catch less. And they seem to differ from lake to lake. Typical speeds for me are 0.9-1.2.
