What are some good brand and model reels for dock shooting. What is the key to look for in a reel for dock shooting. Thanks!

I don't dock shoot very often, but I suspect that any good quality reel that casts well would work just fine.

I've shot docks with all manner of sizes & brands of spinning reels ... from UL sizes to series 2000 size - Shakespeare, Daiwa, Shimano, Mitchell, & Okuma brands. (using 4lb & 6lb test mono) They all did the deed, as far as reels are concerned.

What I look for in a spinning reel is a good drag, instant anti-reverse, and smooth/easy operation (no clicks, grinding noise, etc. when reeling in).

Was spool size any kind of issue,is one better than another. Referring to large and small

You know, one would think there would be a major difference between a UL reel & a 1000 or 2000 series reel as far as shooting distance ... but, I didn't experience it. Now, it is true that I used 4lb test mono on my UL reels & some of the bigger reels ... originally ... and when I switched to 6lb test line I was no longer using the UL reels. That may have made a small difference comparison-wise, but I still got pretty much the same distance in either case.
The only difference I can say, that might be a factor to consider, is the amount of line retrieved per handle turn (retrieve ratio vs reel size). When you turn the handle on a 5:1 UL reel you're not going to gather in as much line per turn as you would on a larger reel ... and sometimes getting the fish out from under a dock "quickly" can be a problem with the smaller reels. I think a happy medium between UL reels and larger reels is to look at a quality brand size 1000 (or 10 in some brands). And as long as the reel balances with the rod you choose, then you're going to have a outfit that will perform well, be comfortable to use, and fun to fish with.

To me rod is much more important than the reel . NOT all rods are good for dock shooting. IMO

I use a 15yo 6’6” BPS Micro Lite ML with a fast tip for shooting. My “Dock Shooter” rod is stiffer than my other rods. My reel is a Shimano Sedona 750. Rod and lures are definitely more important than reels. A stiffer rod is more accurate and some lures “skip” better than others.

I like a little larger spool, 2000, as I feel the line comes off better. I have, and love, the SS6! My reel is a Pflueger.
