Default Rabbit Hair jig for crappie?

What is your technique to catch crappie with Rabbit hair jig? The last few day, I’ve tried my stock of 1/8oz rabbit hair jig all every technique I know, slow steady retrieve , jigging on bottom, slip float etc. until this evening I got one unlucky 12” crappie to bite my jig with steady slow retrieve. I believe this is the first crappie I ever caught with hair jig. This is spot that crappie will be concentrated later on into Summer but not right now.

Slow, steady retrieve, but I never go heavier than 1/16 oz.

I've never found (retail) any rabbit hair jigs? But I have a lot of experience with marabou. I'd recommend stepping down to 1/16 oz. for sure - and under a bobber. Good luck to you.

Rabbit hair moves and pulsates better....even when holding the jig perfectly still in the water. More action in other words. Also holds Slab Sauce better too.

I have found tying both that what G says is true on action but big thing is it will last about 10 times longer than Marabou. The feathers tend to break off real easy where rabbit hair just wears and wears.

Just_Bass, like the others I think I’d try down sizing. That jig looks awful big for crappie, more like a bass jig. If that’s size head you need to cast on that bait caster I think I’d try taking a pair of scissors to it. Shorten the tail to about 1/4 in or so past bend of hook and trim a little off the tips of the hair closer to head. And I probably throw it under a slip float where you can better control depth. Find some in gaudy colors to.

Here a picture of the jig when dry, and yeah I think it look big/long for normal size crappie. I choose 1/8 oz because I’ll use this jig to troll or 10’ deep under slip bobber. A week ago I had a guy told me he saw a bunch of crappie suspended at around 10 FOW. I also have a spot (under big tunnel) that I can troll back and forth early morning which I had a lot of luck last year.
