    Default Water temp

All of our electronics will give us surface temp. Most times a water temp discussion is based on surface temp. Do any of you select your locations by depth temp to find where a specific temp is in the water column?

I do , have a digital temp probe that goes to 10 ft, would like to find one that goes to 20 ft . This time of the year you would be surprised that there is warmer water below the surface . Last Monday i found 62 degree water at 8 ft and the Crappie were right on bottom. Caught a few good ones. This is on Toledo Bend and the incoming water was warmer than the lake water.

I was wondering if I would find someone who does. I have recently heard of a guide and tournament guy who relies heavily on depth temps.

Depth temps are the only temps that really matter to fish...because stabilized Temps determine Patterns.
I have seen on my home lake 70 degree surface temps, and the fish not spawning because the water has not turned over, and the water on the bottom at 20 feet was 54 degrees. We got alot of rain and 2 days later the entire lake was in the mid 60's and they were moving in.

The old Combo-C-lector unit had a temp probe w/50ft cable. (the probe also registered color & pH info)

Back in the '60's we use to regularly use a device called the "Depth-O-Plug". A water pressure tube you lowered to the depth you wanted, then retrieved it to read the temperature down there. Not sure if it's still made or not? But it did work just fine. However, after many decades, I've learned to "relate" the surface temperature, within the normal seasonal changes, to what the fish are feeling (with regards to feeding activity). Seems to work fairly well for me.

Use the poor mans thermometer. Go to dollar store and buy a cheap one tie a line and weight on it lower it over the side wait a minute and haul it back up . I even use it when ice fishing. A couple of lakes I fish have springs and the fish will gather around the springs during the hot summer and bitter cold of winter.
