    Default Cold water crappie.

I’ve heard a lot about cold water crappie taste the best. Time to see if this is true. Went out tonight probably an hour or so with lighted bobbers rig. Started catching them the first cast, decided to keep some for my wife all about 10”, release about the same. It was a fun night watching bobbers goes down.

There was a time when I only kept crappie in the spring or fall when the water was cold. I dislike the mealy texture crappie, actually all fish, get in warm or hot water.

M R Dux taught me a trick. He does not clean fish on the day he takes them out of warm or hot water. He leaves them in the cooler covered in ice and cleans and filets them the next morning. Firm flesh regardless of the water temperature they came out of.

    Good idea Clint.
I always put mine in a heavy minnow bag and put them in the garage fridge. Clean the next day and same results. Firm filets.

I prefer to fillet live fish right into ice water or at least ice cold. That sets the meat real nice and firm. Never have soft crappie fillets that way. We keep the catch alive in a mesh bag over the side, a live well would also work. Dead crappies get soft real fast except in the coldest weather.

cold water crappie in my opinion don't actually taste different, they just have really firm meat and are easier to deal with than fish that are warmer . this is especially true with the white crappie more than the black crappie .
that said you feed crappie to someone or eat them yourself and you are likely to create a monster

Finally I fillet crappie for the first time, my wife gonna kill me if I fillet them all so I only pick 2, the biggest one around 12” and a 10” one. The 12” is pretty good reasonable amount of meat but the 10” is kind of thin and I might need 3 of those to feed me in one sitting lol. I don’t know how some ppl keep the 5-6” crappies.
Another question for your expert, will I harm crappie population if I harvest right before they spawn. Should I wait a couple week longer? I don’t plan to keep a lot just a few here and there to at least make my wife happy from what I’ve spent on the gears.
