When using a drift sock is it necessary to use a drift sock harness, or can I just use a rope?

I agree with Cray, you most definitely want a float of some kind in between sock & boat. If by chance the rope breaks or something else unusual happens, you can still get your sock back. And it facilitates retrieval.
