Need some help.
As some of you know I’ve been out of serious fishing for about 10 years. Well, in that time my local lake has became inundated with milfoil. It’s made it tough to fish for the bank which I really enjoy. All of my backwater trees are covered with milfoil! My question is do crappie prefer milfoil over timber? My backwater lay downs have yet to produce this year and I’m cleaning off milfoil every cast. I REALLY don’t want to buy a 12ft rod and vertical jig the weeds.

Can you cast/reach beyond the edge of the weeds? If so, try a bobber with a jig suspended beneath it. Just make sure your rod is stout enough to pull the crappie in across the weeds.

Thanks. I did fish a float for awhile, still nothing. My concern is the fish don’t seem to be holding on the trees. I’m thinking they are in the milfoil. Gonna take the 9ft rod next chance I get and see if I can jig some out. Hoping to get a few pointers from some folks who fish milfoil.

Might be time to put on some waders or shorts and shoes and slowly work different areas with you 9 foot rod. Remember Millfoil is usually only a coupe of inches deep pain in the arse for sure.

Jdaddy, if it's coon tail, milfoil . I know it's late, I used to in my backyard, was through out something like a piece of chain link fence, on a small boat, get on land and drag back to bank. And of course burn that stuff.

It’s taken over the shallows throughout the entire lake. I remember when they killed it out in ‘87. It didn’t start coming back until about 10 years ago. I’ve heard rumor there are talks to do it again. Bass fishermen love it. Me, not so much, haha! It also been inundated with the zebra mussels. Amazing how much can change in ten years!
