    Default My Favorite Winter Rig

Depending on the temperature, I either cast, vertical jig or float a high low rig!
If you are familiar with a drop shot rig used in bass fishing, I basically use an Aberdeen hook size 2. Tied on via Palomar knot, then take the tag end and string it through the eyelet so that the hook always point back up. The tag end should be about 1.5 ft long. at the end of the tag end, put on a jig. Then you are ready for slaying!

Here is my latest trip out on my kayak:

I like that setup a lot. Last winter I drop shotted quite a few crappie on the Northwest River (VA/NC State Line). Its a great technique. Your method makes it quite versatile. Thx for sharing

Thx man! i love the drop shot. during the more active season, i do a double dropshot rig using two aberdeen hook and it's so far my fav way to ensure covering the water column effectively. i either cast out and bring it in or just paddle around on my kayak and vertical jig them slabs up!

Nice video! I've been using the drop shot for bass and other species, for several decades now. An extremely effective rigging for sure.

That being said, I've tried it on crappie, but have only had limited success. Mainly due to the fact that crappie, in my neck of the woods, tend to move around a lot, as opposed to being cover orientated. Here they tend to chase schools of baitfish in open water basin areas. To stay on them, you almost have to keep moving. There are other more effective presentations in this kind of situation, than drop shotting.

There is no denying the effectiveness of the drop shot if you have them grouped up on cover. Here in MA, we are only allowed one rod w/2 hooks per angler, or two rods each with one hook. Consequently we always fish with two single poles each to keep the spread open and cover more water.

No problem man! i use this rig almost anywhere for any fish. i just change it up with different hook size, weight and lures. Fall time, i had a blast catching them hungry feeding bass! Pickerels would join in as well!

It's not a bad way to comb water super effectively. Again, most ppl double jig but that can get a bit heavy and when u fish near and off the bottom, u are not quite sure sometimes when the bottom lure gets picked off due to the 2nd jig. this rig, regardless of which gets taken, i personally believe that you can feel it, based on my experience that is

Cover is a vague term as some crappies, like in most of my deeper water quarries, use contour of slopes, dropoff and points as structure. I often paddle along these contours slowly and vertical jig a double drop shot rig and have been successful. I believe I have shared that one video in this forum and it's gotten quite amount of views! let me know if you haven't seen it, but basically i use two aberdeen hooks size 1 and i slay hard on it!
