    Default Lake Talquin Weekend

Me and my lady drove 8 hours to some warmer temps over the weekend. After last year’s February trip to Talquin, we were looking forward to getting back down for some big crappie. This time the numbers weren’t there but the quality certainly was! We had 4 2lb fish in two days of fishing. All the fish we found were suspended 15-20’ over 25-30’ of water. I kept seeing large schools of bait with fish around in the river channel. Mostly stacked around the bottom. I wanted to think they were crappie, but I don’t think they were. Here are a few pics of some of the nicer ones.
Water temp -62-64 degrees, VERY windy!
Long lined 1/16 jigs with monkey milk BG and minnows. Some rods had 1/16 split shot for depth

Kept finding these big schools of fish in channel, but could not get them to bite. Not sure If crappie or not.

Nice fish! Really surprised that they are still that deep with water that warm!

Talquin is in N Florida, just W of Tallahassee. Very good crappie lake , deep and clear for a florida lake. Lots of standing timber as well. Not a lot of grass either.

Very nice pictures and some awesome crappie there. Contrats! Your graph is showing a lot of bait. We fish over deep water and target bait balls like that all the time. Don't think I've ever seen a graph actually showing fish that we could attribute to a specific species like crappie. Same with fishing for smallmouths. We don't look for fish.....just bait.

I agree there is a lot of bait in the pic. However, the livescope showed many bigger individual fish swimming in and out of the schools of bait. Even saw them chasing the bait and breaking up the schools. I just didnt catch any of them to confirm crappie or small stripers. Definitely not just bait though.
Thanks Danbo thanked you for this post
