Best line for an ultralight

My vote is for 2lb crappie mono hi vis and if you need toughness around trees an junk, add a 5’ piece of clear 4lb mono. Been working for me for 3 plus years now.

I wont lie, I'm scared of going to 2# line. I've caught some bass on my UL and would be worried about getting in any kind of weeds and it breaking off. I cant stand the thought of losing a single fish!! But I found Trout SOS in 2lb at my local walmart. I've seen someone here suggest it. I may consider that.

I used SOS 2# test for a lot of years....Still have about half of the 20,000 yard spool left. It is a good line...breaking strength is 3.75 pounds. I now only use Japanese lines in hi-vis. Clear...moss green lines...I am no longer able to see.

None of the lines sold in the US are really 2# lines. As Alphahawk mentions above, the SOS 2# line is close to 4# breaking strain. The 4# line you've been using is close to 6# breaking strain, so the SOS 2# would be a good one to try.

Ignore the "pound test" printed on the box. Look at the diameter instead. It's a much better way to compare lines.

I have tried 5 or 6 different brands of line in 2 lb test mono. All work good to some degree but they all have a different personality. Memory, breaking strength, durability from both abrasion and sunlight, stretch, knot strength and so on. The Stren Crappie in both clear and hi vis has satisfied my comfort and aggravation levels nicely, though I can’t see the clear. My leader has been 4lb Stren clear blue and it has also serve me well. One line deteriorated to where it broke very easily and was almost impossible to tie a knot in after only 6 months. My rods are always stored indoors or in a rod box in my old boat. Threw it all away. My point is to try whatever you find, and keep a record of your thoughts on it as time progresses. You’ll find the one you like and it will serve you well for a long time to come, and it might be different than mine. Strength and stretch also go hand in hand. Before the drag sings the line has stretched first, giving the drag a chance to get moving before the line parted. Part of the personality I spoke of. Hope this helps.

Too many posts to quote, but I see all your points now. Until I got my UL I never really was concerned about drag. But now I check it every few casts. Very valid points made and with my UL I'm not looking to rip slab crappie off of timber or frog fish for bass with it.

So upon comments and cost I've narrowed it down to stren crappie mono and trout sos in 2# test. I was thinking yesterday while fishing I sure wish I could see this line better, so hi vis is what I'm going to go for too. I was always so concerned about the fish seeing the line. But in that small of a diameter I'm not worried now.
