Default Best line for an ultralight

I have a Shakespeare micro series ultralight. It's a 4'6 model. It came stock with 4lb stren mono. It's really strong, but boy does it have a ton of memory and as soon as I open the bail it curls off and doesnt wind back on the spool good when I'm reeling in. 99/100 casts I'm reeling slowly with super light lures.

What is a better line choice for this combo? I want to stay at about 4lb test. Thought about braid, thought about fluorocarbon. But I'm new to ultralights. So what do you all use?

That's a problem with pre-spooled reels. The line has been tightly wound on a small arbor and probably been sitting for some time and has developed a tight coil memory. Stren is decent line but under those conditions I suspect most mono would do the same thing.
I fish a private pond for Bluegill and Crappie but I've lost lures to 4-5#Largemouth so I've switched to 6# Fireline braid with a 6# mono leader. I can cast light jigs and small Beetle Spins with ease using the braid and I've landed several nice bass too.
The 6# braid has a tiny diameter, probably like 2-3# mono, it has no memory and cast really well.
Just my preference, I'm sure there are several other viable options.

I like braid alot. I've got it on 4 of my reels and I love it. Two I do a braid to fluorocarbon leader, so I'm familiar with doing that. I'm just trying to see if there are any lines that are good for this kind of application that aren't braid.

The best line for an ultra light would be a JDM line:

Another good options would be SOS line from Trout Magnet:

SOS Fishing Line - TROUT MAGNET

… and Stren Crappie Mono (not original Stren):

    Stren(R) Crappie Mono | Stren(R)

Find you a good 2# test line...it will make things a lot better. For those that think you can't land big fish on 2# test line just have look at my youtube channel....it's not as hard as people make it out to be. Stren 4# test mono is .200mm. That is certainly not UL line....it beaks at 6 pounds.

It's not just the line. For what you're doing, a better reel will help you a lot.

2# test Fireline Crystal with a fluorocarbon leader. Been using this combo on all my ultralites for many, many seasons now. Works well, in my opinion, especially on a #6920 Pflueger President.

I would like a better reel, but for what I use it for, if I can get away with better line I want to go that route.

Looked at all the lines mentioned. For the money SOS looks like a good choice. It's a $20 combo so it would make me cringe a little bit to put line on it that costs more than the whole combo!

Don't buy the bulk spool. Also, as Alphahawk mentioned above, the 2# would be a better choice.
