Was pulling planner boards last spring in a Slough off the main river and as I made a turn 3 different time I picked up 5 fish on the inside boards. Knowing this after getting in a straight line again I dropped speed from .9 to .5 and begin to pick up multiple bites. Also noticed on 2 d that there were lots of fish hold on the bottom. Had a 15 fish limit in 45 min.

Ive seen them pick up disregarded bait off the bottom (dead minnows, wax worms, pieces of night crawlers) basically things they weren't biting on my hook.....off the bottom hundreds of times, well watching them down a ice fishing hole.

Caught quite a few crappie on the Ned this fall and early winter. Wasn't expecting it. Several thumped it harder than the bass!

I definitely think they can and do feed down, though their body design seems to lend themselves to ambushing prey from below. Before I had GPS or a color graph on the boat there was a lot of trial and error involved when learning how to pull cranks for crappie. I would consistently catch good numbers of crappies year round dragging the bottom with 125’ of line out with the Bandit 300s grinding the gravel bottom when I could mark fish in certain areas. These fish were suspended 1-2’ over the bottom and reacting to the sound and action of the lures digging into the gravel below. Now on KY lake I routinely find mussel shells in crappie bellies while cleaning them.

Watch livescope , most guys want their bait just above the fish . I have fished some shallow lakes where many time they are on wood just off the bottom . Lakes where we have pallet stake beds on a mud bottom we bump the pallets at times . First set rule on Crappie is there are no set rules when it comes to Crappie .
