Yesterday I was dragging a Ned Rig around for bass. Slowly and little pops here and there. I get a bite and starting reeling it in and think, this sure doesnt feel like a bass. That's because it was a crappie! Granted it was pretty shallow. Maybe 3-4 ft deep, but it snatched it off the bottom!!

I'm a firm believer that crappie often spend time with their bellies in the mud bottom. I've caught them with muddy anal fins. If they are in times of hardship, they will feed on whatever is available, especially bottom insects. A crappie is still feeding up if he's sitting on the bottom.

Would think any fish may follow a bait down or recognize silt movement . Always thought they cruise around with most offering taken from above . If they are on the bottom only a few inches would put a Carolina rigged Worm in sight . My Grandpa used to say there are no absolutes in hunting and fishing .
It didnt take it on the fall. I and drug the ned about 5 feet before it hit. I hadn't popped it either so it was literally dragging on the bottom. Kicking up silt was my goal. It had to have been on the bottom, but would still have fed level.

I've always found that when it suits them, crappie will feed off the bottom. After all, why are there so many "crappie" crankbaits in crawdad patterns?

Predator species feed in whatever direction the prey is in relation to the predators position in most cases.....so sideways, upwards, backwards and downward is always a possibility is what I think
