I will be the first to admit I do not expect to jump in to a new to me type anything and have anything but a learning curve, If you do, your in for a big let down. Do I expect back lashes, bird nests, and messes that take some figuring out how to get undone??? the answer to the above is all the same answer...a resounding Yes...
Now that being said, I don't believe, even though I might have missed it, the question was...what would be a good line to use, for a beginner, on a level wind/ bait casting reel??? I will probably casting and drop shooting, or I think as Crappy Pappy called it down casting...drop to the bottom and reel up.

All very good and honest comments to consider but no one talked about the rod, which is a major key. You need a very light action full parabolic rod about 8' long, back the reel spool with mono to about 1/3" from full and connect to Fins 40G 1lb thickness chartreuse colored line then add your 7' leader with the Dodd Knot. Now, start practicing for a few weeks and you can do it. This system is not what I would want to use but it will work. Most of use who do use bait casters for jigging crappie, only use them on long rods for flipping, not casting. I am in agreement with the other comments, spinning is the way to go.
