They are closely aligned with Bluegill and similar Sunfish. The one in the picture I posted came along with several Bluegill all caught in the same area.
I suspect many folks have caught and eaten them thinking they were Bluegill or another similar Panfish.
This picture was the catch that morning. Bluegill, Flier, a Crappie here and there and probably another variety of sunfish.. In the end, they were all battered and fried and I doubt anyone knew which variety they had eaten, only that they were darn tasty!

New to me also. Of course tho I live north of that range....but very cool. Thx for sharing!
Not that I was aware of, buddy .... but then I don't target "bream", nor do I fish the "ponds, swamps, riverine backwaters, or weedy lakes the Fliers are prone to inhabit.
Here's a link to the KDFWR "observed" encounters with Fliers (by county) : http://app.fw.ky.gov/speciesinfo/spe...rus&strGroup=1 .... which seems to indicate they are mostly found in the Southwestern portion of the state from what few of the counties I checked out.

That’s definitely a new one to me.

Caught this back in May of 2016. Never figured out what it is. Released it after the picture.
