Try using a bullet style worm weight, or use fluorocarbon main line or leader.

Is it an overhand knot? Happens a lot using shot. I sometimes use a 2 hook rig with a 1/32 jig on the bottom and an Aberdeen above with the shot below the top hook.A few things can help but none of them are foolproof. Instead of letting it free fall straight down gently swing it out away from the boat and let it fall at an angle. If you do cast just lob it out from the side with no english from the rod tip. Make sure the shot is lighter than the jig so it doesn't beat the jig down. Clam style shot are easier to get the knot off of. Check it frequently before it gets really tightened.

A split shot 3-4 feet away from the jig is odd. It sounds like you have a sinker falling faster than the jig with that much loose line in between. It's just begging to get wrapped up. Try 4-8" from the jig, or just use a heavier jig. Keep the line somewhat tight while letting it sink instead of having a bunch of slack in it.

I single pole with 1/64th jigs for the slow fall and a split shot 4-6" up. Occasionally it'll wrap, but if you lower it slowly instead of letting it get slack after bumping the jig it doesn't happen often. You want to be tight to feel the bites on the fall anyway.

Yep...bullet weights are tapered, so the line can't catch, but he'll have to use a swivel so it doesn't slide down. A stiff fluorocarbon leader attached to the swivel would help with tangles also.

Put the split shot closer to the hook. Less than one foot. Also use split shot that don't have tabs on them, either round or football shaped.

Forget the split shot ,it only makes fishing a jig have more problems. you can't tell when you hit bottom and makes it harder to shake a hung jig loose.
