Something you said in the video piqued my interest, something about soon the crappie will only have larger shad to eat. I suppose this is because the shad don't spawn once the water gets cold? So there aren't any small ones after a time? Very good point, so I am researching shad spawning... to match the bait size use a larger bait in winter.

most of the winter shad are larger as they have matured fully .
I do know come winter a BIG bait will get hammered quite often and see folks dropping 3 inch baits with regularity in the winter .

I've caught large numbers of large bass and crappie fishing a 1/64th oz jig in the winter. Didn't want the bass but haven't figured out a way to keep them off my hook.

As SK says, the key is changing bait until you find what those crappie want at that location at the moment.
