Think of it this way. When you have a split shot above your jig (let's say 16"s) the lighter Jigheads will move back and forth under the split shot making it appear alive.

Sort of a pendulum motion just as it does when you try to cast it. The lighter jig can't react as fast as the heavier split shot and the jig swings back and forth.

Subtle movements catch crappie.
