Default Clear Water & Hi-Vis Line

I'm a big fan of Fireline with a fluorocarbon leader. Lately, these old eyes don't easily see the line as well as they use to. Thinking about trying their "flame green", but I'm not sure if it would have any affect on my hit ratio if I do?

If anyone has any experience with hi-vis lines in clear water, I'd sure like to hear about it. Thanks all.

I have used flame green in only one instance. I was fishing clear water in thick grass/weed beds. The color blended into the surroundings better there than open water. Did not notice any difference on the bite.

The late, great Charlie Brewer used hi vis line in his clear TN waters.

Also, consider guys who fly fish for trout. They fish shallow, very clear waters with a thick, bright-colored fly line. The clear leader makes it work.

I don't think crappie are line shy most of the time; I use hi-vis yellow 4lb

bass don't seem to care much either, for that matter

The only fish that I can show you 100 percent for sure that are line shy are trout, and the silvery Black Sea bream I used to catch in the Persian Gulf. I would watch the bream come up and look at my floating dough ball I had out on a wire leader and they would turn away and use their tail to knock the dough ball off the hook then eat it. Replace the wire leader with some 15# test clear mono and they would attack it. Smartest fish I’ve ever pursued. I switched to hi-vis well over a year back as I can no longer see the clear lines. I’m catching just as many crappie as ever. I will most of the time use a section of FC leader as a shock leader because of the polyester line I’m using but I have also been out several times using the orange line without it and my catch rate stays the same.

    Regards

I use hi viz yellow while spider rigging in water that is clear enough to easily see the bottom in over 10' of water. Since changing over from low viz green line my catch rate has increased due to seeing the bite better when it is a light bite. I do not use a leader anymore. I tried a fluorocarbon leader but really didn't see any difference between using it and tying directly to hi viz yellow.

I also have trouble with tying due to poor vision. I have switched to Sufix braid in camo color and can see it great.

I can't say hi-viz line has ever hurt my catch on crappie. Bluegills and redears are a different story. Clear line all the way on them.

Hi-vis orange for me... any hi-vis really but prefer the orange. That being said, I rarely ever fish clear water. On a good day you can see maybe 1.5 to 2 ft. down.
