Most important IMO is line test which affects lure action and depth. Hi ivz has worked fine for me as long as I stay with 6# test braid and maybe a 4 lb test clear FC leader for very light lures and deeper fishing. Restrict lure action or depth (plus speed) and line viz isn't an issue.

I have used hi vis braid tie to a jig In Tennessee’s clear winter water and done very well. The other guy in the boat once insisted on a clear leader and did no different than I. Like MR Dux said, big gills and crackers are different. Trolling clear vs hi vis, no difference.

when crappie are hungry they are dumb as a box of rocks ….disclaimer …. most of the time .
then there is the 5% crowd that looks at the offering for a week and swims off without a peck .
find the dumb 95% crowd and use whatever you want , I seen a many a slabs slung high in the air with a cane pole and cotton line .
if I hit clear waters and could see the fish and they could see me I might use low visibility line though and to be sure the studies I read on black crappie in northern clearer cooler water suggested they have the best vision in those conditions .
finicky crappie are a nightmare I don't want to dream about though .
I do know they have eye sight considerably different than ours and what we see isn't what they see ...food for thought as well .
and to be sure if they don't get long to look it over its less likely to be an issue as well .

Totally agree with this. But when I’m using clear line, I’m mostly using it bobber fishing to help me see the bite.

I’m At the point where clear lines are really a bear, even with a great pair of glasses!. This year I pretty much used Stren Crappie line exclusively and gin clear warm water stream fishing was just fine. I had many’s a high count catch day. This upcoming season I’m going to try some JDM Wild Trout 3 lb and the high vis should work out well.
It’s all fun - that’s the name of the game.

First part I agree with and believe fish see every detail and slight action of a lure. But I've caught crappie on small lures under a float or using a drop shot and by fish standards they have all the time in the world to inspect every lure detail but strike anyway. Thank goodness fish are stupid and detail oriented !

Yep....went to Crappie Maxx hi/vis yellow a few years back for the same reasons. I wondered if it made a difference but catch fish just like clear line. Even put it on my ice reels!

For me using hi-vis line is crucial when fishing minnows and dock shooting. When minnow fishing you will see the line move sideways many times. The rod tip will never move to clue you in about a bite. I say with many a fisherman and told him to set the hook because he his looking at the rod time instead of the line. When dock shooting you will only see the line jump when a fish takes the jig. I can only think of a few instances when clear line was required to catch a crappie. There is a creek I fish that receives a lot of fishing pressure. Any line over 4lbs means very little fish will be caught. I use 2lb fluorocarbon on this creek and it does the trick. My used 17lb test line on baitcasters when he crappie fished. He is was the best crappie fisherman I knew.

Great responses guys. Thanks muchly. I think I will give that hi-vis line a go.....on one rig at least. Hoping to gain some confidence in it.
