I use the head release, but, beware, get in a hurry or not think and bam. I keep a good pair of side cutters in my boat. I have yet to do it yet, but hooks in fingers and shoulders have happened some.

Keep a leatherman with the hardened cutters on my belt when fishing

I hold them by the head not the hook. When Im teaching someone how to shoot, they sit in a metal chair with another metal folding chair about 15 feet away. I get them to concentrate on shooting under the cross piece of the chair in front of them. then we put a coffee can about 15 feet behind that chair to practice accuracy.....Practice pays off especially for new shooters. Time on the water is the best practice though.

When dock shooting what reel is preferred bait casters
I believe most use spinning reels.

I’ve been shooting docks for 30 years. We fish (catch) two days a week with much success. I always hold jig head and have never been stuck.
I prefer a 61/2 foot rod with a 2 series spinning reel
A spin cast will work but not my preference, however, when the bite is light you can run the line over your fingers to more easily detect strikes.
Weedless jigs have their place but may cause you to miss a few
Also 1/32 or 1/16 jigs with four pound line.
Good Luck Fishing

I use a 7 foot medium light rod. I use mostly 1,/32 ounce jig heads with a red #2 sickle hook. I use Pwoer Pro slick 8 braid in 2 pound diameter. I can pull my hooks out most of the time. I don't like leaving jig heads in dock for people or kids to run across and get hurt. It also allows me to bring most fish I hook out from under the dock.
