I small foam clip on float works well for practice and it is kitten and puppy approved.

My shop/garage door is taking a beating with me practicing the technique. I can get about 30 feet from the door with the exact set-up I fish with, hook intact. Concrete and water are different but I try to skip the jig a couple of times before it hits the door. We have floating docks on KY and Barkley Lakes but some folks drop bucket beds and brush inside the slips in areas where low water won't be a problem. I side-scan the docks I plan on fishing to find the ones that have structure that is holding fish. I point my rod directly at my target then pull straight back under the rod. My hand is usually just about even but under the reel . I hold the jig head unless I'm using a tiny head like a 1/32. then I'll hold the hook bend.

I don't know much about dock shooting , but way back when about 50 plus years ago is when I first tried it . The term back then was bow and arrow casting and we used it with fly rods in tight quarters .
I have never been good at it though and still just side arm cast from a few feet out away from the target area ,you know parallel to the water with the rod and a hard fast wrist .
I was always chicken and envisioned a hook buried in my finger tip to the bone and thunk that's a bit far to go to ketch a fish for me

Bad form holding the jig becomes self correcting unless you like your finger hooked. Had a close call or two when I first started

I only had one hook knock on wood in my finger to the bone one time when I was about ten and after about 5 or 6 different people tried to get it out of my finger that they about broke off my hand jerking on it . I finally got to have about half my finger tip taken off at the emergency room to get that number 8 gold wire out of my finger tip bone . that kinda sealed the deal with me on anything that might cause that type of injury in the future for sure .
I would venture to say I am still traumatized to this day to a degree and it may even be why I aint quite right in the head sometimes

They taught me to always hold the snake by the head or you’ll get bit ! I hadn’t been bit yet so I’ll keep holing it by the head!

Both. Still experimenting with this technique. I seem to do better with holding the bend of the hook method. ¯\_(?)_/¯
