Default Do crappie minnows need light in bait tank

I have 2-55 gal drums for bait tanks, 1 for big msky-pike/bass/eye minnows and 1 for crappie minnows. I keep them in the basement and the only time the lights on is when I feed/check on them usually on 1/2 hr/day at most.

does being in the dark all the time give a bad effect on them

I imagine if you want to keep them longer than a week or 2 you might want to give them some light .
I am not sure if it will help or hinder them without any light though.
most species in captivity do better with an environment closer to what is real .

cant answer that question. my minnow tank sets by my plant rack. that has a shop light over it with a timer on it, so my baits do get light.

I put led bulbs in a couple of my home lights. outside my garage and in the basement. I just leave them on all the time. they cost like 15-20 bucks a year to run.

I think I should of ask do minnows need light to keep them healthy over long period of time. Your idea of a light with a on/off timer sound like a good idea. I have 4 florescent lights in the basement, all come on with the switch so I didn't want to leave them all on just to get light to tanks. I have a desk light I use to grow veggy seedlings in the spring think I'll use that on a timer .

With aquarium fish varying the lenght of light per day can trigger them to spawn. I think most living things need some light to help regulate it's day. I know that deep ocean fish and cave dwellers do not see any light but most animals do. A day night cycle couldnt hurt. LED bulb and a cheap lamp timer

I keep my minnows in a fridge in my barn kitchen. I change the water about once a week, other than that they don't get light as I only fish at night. I have kept minnows for about 6 weeks before I have used them up.
