How big was that fish tank Slab? I'd love to put a crappie or two in one of my tanks but I have a feeling they are to small and they would be to much trouble.
I had some 5 and 6" crappie in my 40 gallon tank and they did great for 5 months but died when the summer heat hit.

How many did you have in there and how often did you feed them? One of my tanks is a planted 46 gallon bow front. It currently has no occupants.
Pictures do not to that fish justice. It’s an absolute monster

I had 2, I fed them small minners 3 or 4 times a week and nightcrawler pieces - they would eat the worms off the bottom like catfish. And they were a mellow well behaved fish. Green sunfish and gills fight and are like piranhas at feeding time. I have the best luck with tiny fish - now I have five 2" gills and two 2" bullheads.

I have four crappie in a hundred gal tank. I like to keep fewer fish in my tanks, that way I don't have to clean the tanks often. But you can certainly keep 4 in your 48 gallon tank.
I feed them worms exclusively. Worms get fully digested, minners are dirty, dirty, dirty. Essentially with four in a hundred gallon tank, I never clean it, and I have no filter! Yep, you heard me right. I only have an aerator. The fish are in the hot screen room all year long. Hot in Summer, and cold in winter, but it is Florida. And in the winter I do have a small heater in the tank set low. They've been there three years now, no problem.
They are shy fish, and don't seem to do well with other more aggressive fish.
Oh, yeah, feeding....I feed them worms daily, and when I'm away they may go 3-4 days with no food. I'm sure over the three years there's been at least one week where they got no food at all. Very happy fish. They come to the front and wag their tails at feeding time. They are funny, when you shine a light on them at night, they turn sideways to you so that the light is on top of them.

Man if I could do just worms that would be the ticket. Gonna check into this now for sure. That tank is planted without a heater but has a canister filter. I think they would like it if I could just catch some smaller ones. At least 2 I'm thinking. I’m with you on little or no cleaning. A little waste is a good thing in planted tanks. Plant fertilizer....lol. Thanks
