Hooked in bottom lip?

Why does this happen? Today and yesterday I would estimate two thirds of the fish we caught out of about 80 or 90 were hooked in the bottom lip. I have noticed this in the past on occasion but never a majority of the fish like the last couple days.

Maybe the fish were diving down to get to the bait.

Lol. Thats what I told my buddy...they were swimming upside down. On another note, we all know that crappie only feed up

It's that time of year. The lake is turning over, all the fish are swimming around upside down.

I catch most of my crappie hooked in the lip. I prefer that instead of hooking deeper in the throat due to the ease of hook removal. I don't mind those I lose. I find I don't lose them if I am slower in bringing them into the boat instead of horsing them out of the water. I also don't try to tear their heads off with a hook set.

Tru-turn hooks are good if you are fishing with live bait. I used them fishing the Gulf Coast until circle hooks become the law.
