    Default What happened?

Yesterday I was fishing some laydowns on 12 mile bayou for crappie with a jig tipped with a minnow, I dropped the jig just outside the visible limbs and let it sit there for a minute or so, when I went to ease up on it, it was hung on a limb, or so I thought, I pulled up pretty hard and up comes a largemouth bass that was at least 7 or 8 pounds, it was huge, and when I realized that I needed the net, I went to grab it and the bass went back down in the water and all of a sudden the line popped and went loose, I was using 8 pound test high vis line, so I thought the line broke, I pulled the end of the line to me and looked at it, and the loop knot that I had tied the jig on with, was still intact, it wasn't broken anywhere. So the only thing I can figure is maybe the eye of the jig broke. Has anybody ever had this happen? I was so sick, it would have been the biggest bass I've ever caught

I have had jig hooks break. I can't recall one breaking at the eye. The eye has a lot of built in stresses from being shaped.

More than likely the jig eye wasn’t closed good?? I’ve had line although not as thick as 8 lb slip through there and come off.

That's what I was thinking happened, I figured maybe the eye wasn't closed as tight as it should have been, whatever it was, it made me sick lol

It is enough to make a mans heart sink to feel a line go slack

I have had that happen several times especially with braid. When using a loop knot I try to remember to put a little crip on the eye with pliers. I would be sick losing one like tha.

Yes it is. I'm not a bass fisherman, but I definitely would have put this one on the wall, it makes me nauseous when I think about it lol

Thanks, I've never had it happen before, but from now on I'll check the eyes before I tie it on
