I would return it to the store and get a refund and here’s why. It’s going to cost you about 40 bucks to return it to St Croix for warranty. You must pay to ship it to them and you must send a 20 dollar check for them to return the rod to you. So I figure the total will be about 40 bucks.

Aggravating I’m sure. I’ve been to the mudhole store and seen firsthand several different reel seats side by side. I respect the Fuji name for rod parts but for the life of me I couldn’t see any difference. Between one of theirs and one costing much less. If I liked the rod I would use a couple of wraps of 3M electric tape(I believe theirs stretches more consistently) and stretch it as little as possible on the last wrap. It’s plastic and has memory and the glue is only capable of holding so much stretch.

For the reel I would talk with customers service first. You might also talk with Kels rod and reel repair in Casselberry fl about a possible cause. Very good shop. I have a 6920 that tightens the drag a little by itself no matter what I do. I’ll probably have to replace the spool and drag nut to fix it, one day. Haven’t contacted them about that yet.

Who knows... it might have been a customer return that some slack store person just put back on the shelf to avoid sending it back to the manufacturer. Not that it happened in this particular case... but sadly people buy reels and lots of other things when they need a replacement part... and then just take it back to the store once they scavenge what they need. I'm sure it's aggravating... but I feel relatively sure it will all work out with little or no real hassle for you.

Man Sorry for your aggravation Dave...That's the kind of luck I have, so I just stick to my old faithful's. I even tried to order a rod after a recommendation from SK. Looked on their site, couldn't find a price, sent an e-mail. I got a confirmation e-mail that they received it, and I would receive my info shortly...a month later sent another e-mail only to receive the same reply...and I haven't heard squat from them. No phone number listed anywhere. Oh well, guess I'll stick with ol' reliable some more...And good luck on resolving your issues on the rod and reel.

I don't know about returning it to the store. Most GOING OUT OF BUSINESS sales are ALL SALES FINAL NO RETURNS.

I was in the Gander store in Winston Salem last Tues and that is exactly what I was told. I picked up a President XT for $38 and thankfully, mine works perfectly.

If your not use to dealing with plfueger reel's they tighten up different from your average Shimano and the likes. It has two sets of threads if I remember correctly. To seat the 2nd set you have hold the nut and spin the handle.

Funny you mention this. The nut on the side is so tight we can't get off. Well not with fingers anyway, haven't used a wrench yet. Came out of box that way. That's just a cap though isn't it? The handle spins and tightens without messing with the nut/cap.

Sorry to hear that Dave. Are there any other Gander Mountain stores nearby, or are they all going out of business?
