Default Warning for all Pet owners!

We all Love our pets, thought this needed to be posted.

Dog owners have reported this summer that their pets became fatally ill after swimming in freshwater lakes and ponds, apparently after ingesting water laden with toxic blue-green algae. ... Algal blooms tend to thrive in high temperatures and after heavy rains.

I don’t have a dog, but I do have a pond full of that stuff. I hope that the critters know not to mess with it.

I have also heard of this happening, not worth taking a chance on losing your pet.

It’s a wonder that none of my hunting dogs ever died from drinking swamp water. These must be house pooches not used to to that kind of water.

We just got an "Emergency Notification" on our phone yesterday that our town's ponds are shut down to all recreational activities due to the blue algae contamination. That includes all boating, fishing and swimming. Sad. First time in the 50 years that I've lived here.

A problem with testing for "hab" (harmful algal bloom) is it takes several days to get the results. Let's pick on a local lake, we had it. The lake has an overflow dam. Got a heavy rain, shortly after finding out. Now it's out of the lake.
They're some field test kits, that yield results fairly quickly. There not quite as accurate though.
Part of the reason it's suddenly a big deal, the world health orginization said it is. Also, Science/technology has gotten better at disseminating various algaes.
