Spincast

It's been well over 50 years since I've used a spincast reel. Back when I was a kid we had either the Johnson Century or the Zebco 33. Now since my grandson (12) has discovered an interest in panfishing (especially crappie) I'd like to get him his own outfit.

He used a friends closed face last week and loved it. So, I'm relying on you folks to clue me in to what is a good quality spincast reel for his birthday next month.

I remember some of the troubles I use to have with the old ones. Namely, the failure to pick up line fast enough when you start the retrieve. That and the line getting inside the rotor pin cup. I'm hoping that over the past several decades, some of these woes have been alleviated. Maybe not? In any case, I'd appreciate suggestions as to what I could consider to buy him. Thanks much Folks!

For the money this is probably what I would start him with. Has a good gear ratio and the couple I have used has a decent drag. It’s unbelievable to me the price of some of the better reels in spincast today.

SHAKESPEARE® SYNERGY® TI REEL


The Shakespeare Synergy TI spincast reel allows you to switch the handle to left or right hand retrieve. It seems not many spincast reels allow this feature.

It is relatively inexpensive and the one my grandson uses seems to work well.

I would look at the undermount spin cast reels. It would make the transition to open face a little easier.

Not sure what the President spincast costs. For the the money, Pflueger Trion is a great spincast. About $25 bucks, and 2 bearings instead of just one in a Zebco 33. I have several and like them a lot for the price point.

Daiwa Silvercast- 100 A Series Spincast Reel is the best I own for a few reasons:

1. I like low diameter braid and since the line exit hole is the largest of any reel I've seen, it allow casting a light lure over 42'
2. rotating line p/u not a ceramic post
3. Gear ratio 4.3:1
4. drag is smooth and easy to increase or back off
5. anti-reverse button has helped me net very large fish where I didn't want to rely on the drag such as 3 lb catfish and this fish which I'm not sure what it is:

6. I use it on a light action 6' spinning rod considering how the line unwinds from the spool no different than a spinning reel. The rod guides point up. It helps with casting distance.

The 100A is more than large enough and goes for $28 /free s/h on Amazon. I used it mostly today to catch 55 fish.

I bought both of my kids Shakespeare spincast combos a few years ago. So far no problems with them. I even have a Shakeaphere microlite light and ultralight spinning combo myself now. For the money they can't be beat.

I don't think you can avoid the occasional tangle around the rotor pin but they're easy to clean up.

If it were me (for my kids or myself) i wouldn't hesitate to but another Shakesphere.
