Wind changes

Does it effect crappie as much as people think , the simple answer in my experience is YES .
When a developed wind pattern changes on many spots I visit it has an adverse effect most of the time on patterns that are producing fish .
Now mind you there are exceptions to every rule and crappie break ALL the rules frequently so never say never .
I hit a spot yesterday I like and the wind was steady north and to be sure I have done well there in lots of different wind directions . The problem I think with yesterdays production was a wind change from a pretty heavy south most of the last month and bait movement in said winds . The bait has been really heavy all over that spot the last 2 visits ,but yesterday there wasn't much to be seen .
Do the crappie quit feeding is the next question and the answer in my experience is probably not for very long if at all and they have likely just moved to where the food went .
The good news is a north wind in the summer makes not ketchn many fish much more bearable
I managed 5 in an hour and they were tough to ketch and none were big . And the folks there with me didn't ketch any by the time I left and I gave them my jig and told them I hope they turn on right after I leave .
I really didn't have time to explore or look anywhere else though and I have an idea of where the fish might have been on that lake . the problem for me was the smoker had a piggy in it and it was time to go get said piggy off the smoker and onto my dinner plate .
So you see wind changes even effected me as it made the smoker run just perfect to keep the temp real low for a real slow cooked oinker

p.s. piggy went on smoker at 8 am and dinner was at 6 pm ….just saying

Nice pig and, oh yeah, good insight. Wind definitely makes a difference if you are fishing near the bank. Not so much if over deep brushpiles.

I am near the bank for sure brother in most cases these days , but the good news is I have several pairs of boots

Recent observations and conclusions:
First I find fish on the sonar screen in an area regardless of depth. No fish of any size, usually no fish period! What I've found is that the probability of finding crappie or any catchable fish is higher when fish are swimming or suspended mid-depth in loose schools with species most likely mixed. (Safety in numbers I suppose....)


The other conclusion I've come to is that the fish we catch may or may not be feeding. If I catch a bunch of fish in different directions in a large area, should I assume they are all feeding on something (mostly minnows) and for 5 straight hours and on consecutive days in summer!!? Should we assume there is no other reason for fish to attack our lures other than consumption?

When I make lures that resemble nothing in nature and they get slammed often, I note lure action in combination with lure size and shape. That's it! The motive for the attack is not my concern but why that lure with those unique characteristics get hit more often than many others - IS! Take a dozen lures that supposedly resembles a forage animal but only one gets strikes. Makes you wonder - or at least it should.....
