I had that very thing happen to a Bass rod that got left in a bend, in my car during the Summer .... ruined. I have a fiberglass rod, right now, that the tip end is bent (slightly twisted) from having been left stacked in a corner (hand me down rod from my Mom/Stepfather).
Ruining that Bass rod, back 35-40yrs ago, was all it took for me to stay away from situations that would ruin any more rods, and I've kept them stored "in the house/apt" in storage racks & with no line tension on the tip. My boat is stored outside, covered, and I don't leave rods in the rod box (or in the truck).
