    Default Kentucky lake Asian eradication

Haven't seen this posted on here yet, but this may be a small victory on getting the Asian carp numbers down. It's definently a win win for Kentucky lake.

This is more great news! This method to take out Carp has worked other places now its coming here to Kentucky Lake thanks to the hard work of Ron Brooks, KY Fish & Wildlife, who has been pushing for this - BUT it would not be happening without Senator McConnell pushing for this! He got this done! Wade

    PRESS RELEASE:
At Majority Leader McConnell’s Request, Trump Administration to Aid Kentucky in War on Asian Carp

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will dedicate personnel and equipment to Western Kentucky and work with Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife and fishermen to combat the Asian Carp infestation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced today the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has agreed to his request to deploy the advanced “Unified Method” of fishing for removing Asian Carp, an invasive species in Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. Today’s announcement comes on the heels of Senator McConnell’s May visit to Western Kentucky with members of the Trump Administration, where he discussed options to address the Asian Carp invasion with local elected officials, community leaders and the local media.

One option discussed during the meeting was the “Unified Method,” which involves corralling Asian Carp into one location using electronic technology and extracting the fish from the water with specialized nets. This technique has been successful in controlling Asian Carp populations abroad, and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has successfully deployed it in Missouri and Illinois.

Senator McConnell raised this issue personally with U.S. Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt, and he also contacted both USFWS and USGS to encourage collaboration between the agencies to bring the “Unified Method” to Kentucky. He urged USFWS and USGS to evaluate this method of harvesting Asian Carp and to offer technical assistance, personnel and equipment in support of both Kentucky’s fishermen and the region’s tourism economy.

“Today’s announcement is a major step forward in Kentucky’s War on Asian Carp. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has answered my call to deploy an aggressive strategy to combat these invasive and dangerous species in Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. With coordination among several agencies at all levels, we can help protect Kentucky’s treasured waters, support our boaters and anglers, and bolster Western Kentucky’s $1.2 billion fishing economy,” said Senator McConnell. “As Senate Majority Leader, I’ve worked with local leaders like Judges Wade White and Kevin Neal to bring national attention to this pressing threat in our Kentucky lakes. In the War on Carp, I’m glad that Kentucky is receiving the national attention we deserve.”

In approving his request, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Principal Deputy Director Margaret Everson thanked Senator McConnell for his leadership on the issue, saying, “The Service is working with its partners, including the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR), to prevent continued Asian Carp migration. Thank you for your continued leadership and support for collaborative efforts to address the threat of Asian carp in our Nation’s waters.”

"Senator Mitch McConnell went to bat for West Kentucky,” said Judge Wade White, Lyon County Judge Executive. “When I contacted Senator McConnell about the Asian Carp crisis, he took the time to recognize the problem and used his experience and a hands-on approach to bring solutions. The ‘Unified Method’ for removing Asian Carp is an exciting opportunity to make a real impact on this invasive species. If it weren't for the guidance and assistance we received from Senator McConnell, this never would have happened. I'm looking forward to seeing the impact this method can make and appreciate the attention and real solutions Majority Leader McConnell has brought to the Asian Carp crisis.”

In the recently enacted FY’19 Interior Appropriations bill, Senator McConnell, a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, helped secure $11 million – a $600,000 increase from the FY’18 level – for efforts to combat Asian Carp in the Mississippi and Ohio River basins, including in Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley.

Any and all efforts are positive, fighting invasive species is a battle and that it has become.
MRDux stated in a recent post that the situation on KY Lake is not as bad as many have suggested, that is not a direct quote, just a bit of what he had to say by my recollection.
I have loved KY Lake all my (66 years) and always will.

Thanks for sharing. Hopefully it helps. My time on Ky lake last year showed me so many carp, it was unreal. Never seen anything like it.

It will be interesting to see if the state of TN has any sort of leadership that comes alongside KY in this battle.

There is no doubt that the hard work of the commercial netters is helping the situation. It's just criminal in my mind that the politicians waited so long to decide to listen to the voices that have been warning of this scenario for a decade or more. Darrell VanVactor of Crappie USA has been to DC several times to testify before Congress but until the tourist industry and real estate market started to suffer, nobody cared.

Yes, we have carp.Yes, we have carp nets. Yes, IMO the bluegill/redear fishery is suffering the worse from the Asian carp. That said, we still have great lakes that are coming back strong from several bad spawns and have a bright future. The main thing is everybody has to get along to keep this solution to the carp problem moving forward.

The demise of KY and Barkley Lakes has been greatly exaggerated.

Better luck than we had here in MO! Small (300 acre) lake infested because the feeder stream from the river was NEVER BLOCKED, they took out 47k carp last year, DID NOT BLOCK the feeder stream, so they were to try again this year until THE FLOOD, which WAS A RE-FEED. Nets are not not a tried and true method, because of bottom debris. GOOD LUCK. It's worth watching!!!!

That's why many of us have supported a multi-method solution. They are now working on a "Bubbler" barrier at the entrance to the Barkley Dam locks that is said to keep 70% of the normal number of Asian carp that would normally enter the lakes thru the lock chamber each time the lock is used. Once they see that barrier can stop a large %, they will install them on most, if not all, the locks on the TN and Cumberland Rivers.

70% is a good start and the whole idea is to stop carp from entering the lakes from the rivers below by accessing the lock chambers. You have to stop the fish from entering a body of water before you can deal with the ones that are already there in the lakes.

Tellico Lake has confluence with Ft. Loudon Lake several hundred yards above Ft. Loudon Dam. The joining of the two lakes is via a channel of +/- 150 yards. It could be a barrier to preventing the carp from entering Tellico. However, to date, I have heard of no plan to protect Tellico ultilizing this natural constriction.
