.... yeah, it can & will happen if the umbrella isn't anchored in some way (hence the cotter pin in my rigging). Now the only problem I encounter is having the umbrella itself turned inside out by high winds or gusts.
My alternative to using the umbrella rig is a wide brim boonie style hat (white), and UV blocking sleeves & gloves. For extreme cases I also carry a white UV blocking face shield & 100SPF sunscreen. I've already had enough cryosurgery and excision to remove Squamous Cell Carcinomas from my arms, to last me for the rest of my life.

I will be adding a safety chain and padlock to my set up. Thanks for all the comments and ideas.

I bought something similar to this from a dept store in London. Made a great "temporary" bank/surf fishing fishing shelter. Protected me from the sun, "light" wind, and "sprinkles." Temporary as in salt spray rusted the metal supports even though i treated them with bearing grease, grease left stains, heavy wind bent supports, and holes from a bonfire my friend made too close to camp.

96 degrees today. Went to Lake Martin in Dadeville AL. No crappies were near shore and there was no shade anywhere near where I was. I was on Air Force Road near Maxwell AFB.
I got under a tree and then later added my shade umbrella to the chair for fishing. The wind was really blowing the umbrella out of the holder so when we get back home tomorrow I will add a chain connecting the umbrella with the PVC pipe. It was nice to finally see some water after the cancer radiation treatments.
Camouflage face mask on. Gnats were very numerous. LOL Crappies were unreachable from shore. They were deep as the temp was 96 degrees.

Where did you get the umbrella? I need one.
