I just replace them with new ones. I learned a long time ago that dull hooks will lose fish. I never could sharpen them as sharp as the new ones anyway and I can replace faster than trying to sharpen them also.

Buy them by the hundreds. Just make sure you get quality hooks.

I fish for walleyes a lot and recently I was setting the hook but the fish were coming off after the hook set. Checked the jig hooks and the barb was bent down. Had about 40 jigs with the barb bent down. I melted the lead off and threw the hooks away.

Orvis makes a small hook hone made for flies and small hooks. Just run the point down the v groove two or three times and it is sharp again. Very easy and quick. Can be resharpened several times before the point wears down.

One issue however is that many of the newer hook designs go through chemical sharpening process. This makes them needle sharp however you cannot resharpen them. Once they are done, they are done. Just an FYI

This process is prone to make these hooks very brittle and they break. Jig hooks such as the Matzuo sickle hooks are one of the main culprits in this. Most anodized hooks are also chemically sharpened. I beleive the Lil Nasty sickle hooks are as well as all of the hooks that come on the Berkley Flicker Shad and Flicker Minnow series of cranks.

The Berkley hooks are so bad that we often find ourselves taking the baits out of the package and changing the hooks before we ever put the baits in the water. One hard pull with pliers to get a hook out of walleye or pike and the hooks break. Plus, as I said before, you cannot sharpen them. We replace with quality hooks that can be sharpened and will not break when you pull on them.

I've never sharpened a hook. Got this image in my mind I find kind of funny though. I have a small 1" sander, mount's on a table. Great for sharpening tools. You could take it along with a 2000 watt generator to sharpen hook's. Or, it would take up less space, in the boat, but a long extension cord reaching back to the dock might work!

I've seen those hand held sharpener's for hooks but never seen one out of a store! Sharpening a hook seem's a bit frugal to me I mean, how much does a hook cost? I see a guy in a $20k boat saving money by sharpening a hook! I guess I should mention I seldom spend much on hooks, have a ton of inex,,,,cheap one's now. But recently bought some of those circle type hooks, look like they are just the thing for bait fishing but wonder. Shoot I've been using old style hooks all my miserable life! This got me to thinking. If I really need a circle hook, how in the world did I ever catch a trout with single egg hooks? In the end, I think we all over think a whole lot of thing's. Guy lose's a fish at the boat and blames it on a dull hook. How do we come up with that? Maybe the fish just spit it out!

I know of a guy, nice guy, that swear's the only way to filet a crappie is with an electric knife. I don't have one so am stuck with my old junk Rapala's! What came first, the crappie or the electric filet knife. Wonder what cave men sharpened their hooks with? Oh well, the though of some of these thing's just hit a funny bone in me. I'll go back to my room now! :-)
