I've seen those hand held sharpener's for hooks but never seen one out of a store! Sharpening a hook seem's a bit frugal to me I mean, how much does a hook cost? I see a guy in a $20k boat saving money by sharpening a hook! I guess I should mention I seldom spend much on hooks, have a ton of inex,,,,cheap one's now. But recently bought some of those circle type hooks, look like they are just the thing for bait fishing but wonder. Shoot I've been using old style hooks all my miserable life! This got me to thinking. If I really need a circle hook, how in the world did I ever catch a trout with single egg hooks? In the end, I think we all over think a whole lot of thing's. Guy lose's a fish at the boat and blames it on a dull hook. How do we come up with that? Maybe the fish just spit it out!

I know of a guy, nice guy, that swear's the only way to filet a crappie is with an electric knife. I don't have one so am stuck with my old junk Rapala's! What came first, the crappie or the electric filet knife. Wonder what cave men sharpened their hooks with? Oh well, the though of some of these thing's just hit a funny bone in me. I'll go back to my room now! :-)
When one's lively hood depends on whether a fish is put in the boat, then one will decide whether it is worth sharpening a hook or not! Many people believe that if you cannot put a hook in the back of your fingernail, it needs to be sharpened. It is no different than ensuring that your tires are inflated properly. Basically allowing you to get the most out of your equipment.

Some people fish for recreation and barely scratch the surface of dulling a hook because it is lost long before it goes dull. Others have thousands of dollars invested in crank baits and spoons and they last a lifetime. Yes, you can change the hooks (as needs to be done with some baits) but you can sharpen a hook much faster than you can change one out with split ring pliers.

In the case of livelyhood, when charter fishing where your clients spend in excess of $600 on a 6 hour salmon trip, the fish of a lifetime can often be lost simply because the hook wasn't sharp enough to penetrate the tough jawplate of a King Salmon or Steelhead. I would hate to think that I couldn't put a fish in the boat for a client simply because I didn't take 30 seconds to ensure that all of my gear was in tip top shape.

I fish walleye tournaments. In some cases there is more than 80K on the line. The last thing I want is to miss a hookup over the potential that a hook isn't sharp.

It is like anything else, we always try and ensure our gear is in tip top shape in order to get the most out of it. It is no different than taking a rifle out of the cabinet and putting a few rounds through it to ensure the scope is on, even though it was deadcenter when you put it in the case!

I say replace but I do have a lot of hooks/jigs. If you have the time and enjoy sharpening, then do that. Personally, I neither have the time or would enjoy it. I enjoy getting out on the water and fishing. I think fish are mostly caught or lost by the hook-set and the barb. More time should be spent learning this in my opinion. Have you ever been stuck with a not so sharp hook? IT HURTS! Lol. Oh, I think we are talking about Crappie Fishing aren't we?...
