Default Anyone fish with someone clueless yet frustrating?

I sometimes think some people just aren't cut out for fishing. I've known this fellow club member for four years who is not really into fishing nor has the temperament or the patience. He has a nice boat which is supposed to be for when he retires, and being close to a nearby lake we both fish, can go when he feels like it. Problem is, he remembers the lake as it was 15 years ago when catching fish was easy, which at present going back 5 years is now far more difficult. (I won't go into the reasons why.)

So, he invites me to fish on his boat after my dental appointment and meet at 11 am. But as I'm leaving I get a call that it's not worth it considering he only caught 2 panfish and had one large fish break his line. What the....?!!!! To me, getting out with a partner is a big plus regardless how many fish are caught, especially if it's going to be a nice day - which it was. 2nd, I don't know about the rest of you, but I see it as a challenging learning experience when it comes to the water I'm fishing. His thing is closing his eyes and catching fish; mine is opening my mind and finding more pieces to fit into the puzzle.

The other thing is his daily routine which, me being retired, is not mine! His thing is to be out on the water by 6 am because he is routinely up by 4:30 am daily. I'm lucky if on the water by 8:30 and rarely see any advantage to being on the water early. In fact most of my best catches have been from 9:30 am to 5 pm or later regardless the water. When he wants to leave the lake at 11 am when the fishing is slow, I start to simmer inside because transporting my stuff to the launch, helping launch his boat, spending far more time running than fishing and then leaving early leaves me wondering why I wasted the gas or time I could have been fishing alone.

It's interesting that he blames the lure as the reason he's not catching fish, remembering lures he used to own that caught fish - again - with his eyes closed. I would give him different lures I know catch fish when fish are found and yet he would go through 6 different ones before finally catching a fish, insisting it was the right lure as the reason.

Every year I have to remind myself that sometimes fishing alone is far less frustrating regardless of the catch and yet also rewarding when I can share my experiences with all of the fine gents on crappie.com. Some just don't have the temperament nor the skill which requires many hours on the water regardless the water. I feel for them, but would rather fish alone in a different boat!

we are all cut from different cloth my friend . I am short on patience when I get near the water .
I have to get a jig wet fast or I get all nervous and such .
but to be sure I go with several different guys that have a laid back approach and are not in a big hurry .
my ADHD is to blame I think and I am sure someone don't like the way I hurry
its all in how you look at the picture I am pretty sure .
    different strokes don't you know

Reminds me of a childhood friend of mine. He was the bestest buddy as long as he was winning the games we played, but when he lost ... that was it, the world had ended & it was his fault and playtime was over.

You might ask this guy : Are you the same as you were 15yrs ago ?? (the obvious answer being "no, of course not") Then explain that the lake isn't either, and slower approaches & longer time on the water just might be the answer to catching more fish. If he resists and falls back on his old ways of thinking, then it probably is time to & go it alone (or with another, more willing partner).

When I go with someone else I fish the way they want to fish not the way I want to fish. If asked I offer my opinion otherwise I don't critic their style. Sometimes it about the relationship not catching fish. I always deer hunted alone because most people don't have the patience for archery and two people means twice the noise and scent. Fishing is more amenable to being a social activity.

If I wouldn't fish with you, you're not my friend! I have a saying: if I wouldn't spend eight hours of my day in my boat with you, we probably are not friends.

We may know each other, we may like some of the same things, but, truth is, we are not truly friends! I have few friends and I like that just fine!

Approaching 60 I think it's too late for him. You're either one type of angler or not and that's great if you're fishing with someone more or less like you. But someone who is constantly on the trolling motor pedal, not giving areas enough time, demonstrates a temperament more suited to bowling than fishing. It's amazing he's a hunter which requires as much patience sitting quietly in the woods until prey is within gunshot distance. Of course he's back home by 10 am if there's nothing to shoot.

Last year on another lake I found different areas we caught over a dozen fish in each late morning and well into the afternoon. As long as he caught fish, no problem but if he had to find fish himself, he would have left before midday. I think I'll be coming up with excuses why I can't fish with him seeing as how I lose sleep worrying I won't be on time to his house by 7 am. Not being able to fish my way or having to hear constant complaints such as, there's just no **** fish in this lake, dampens my enthusiasm and makes me want to leave sooner than later.

If I can't be there by first light, I won't go. It is my time of day. Usually when the early bite is good it is real good. It doesn't always happen. When not fishing,
I watch day break every morning from the back porch except when it's hard cold. I go early and usually get off the lake by 12:00 to 1:00. Clean and package
my fish, eat lunch, and rest a while. If you go with me, that's the way you will also fish. If I go with you, we'll fish the way you want too. If I don't like the way
you fish, the next time you call I will have an excuse why I can't go and thank you for asking me.
    Tell'em I'll be there.

    Fair enough.
Most of us have reasons we fish, many that are different and some based on more or less experience. Compatible anglers are difficult to find in my area and none I've fished with are into lure design and testing which is no big deal. I've fished tournaments with boater-anglers that don't have a clue and given excuses if I got drawn to fish with them again. My days off are something I valued big time and spending time on the water frustrated, which inevitably leads to boredom, was never worth my time or money.

I too am an early riser and dearly love seeing the sunrise over a peaceful body of water. Weather I catch fish, if they’re active or not, that is a part of the day for me. I also consider whether I can spend time in a boat with someone. Some people just aren’t on the list, but there are many that are and some I call friends. Over the last five years I have joined others in the concept that when it stops being fun, I stop doing it. If we don’t enjoy the day together, I won’t do it again. Life is too short. That hasn’t happened to me in a while and I’m sorry it has happened to you. Good people and even more, good friends are hard to find and I cherish every one. Gods gift. Maybe he’ll come around one day. Til then, enjoy the ones that make you smile.
