I fish alone, with my sons, my grandkids and one very good friend and his son. I really wouldn't mind fishing with someone who was clueless as long as they didn't talk or move or make noise or breathe....

    Cool

I take my work and family seriously, my sports and politics not so much. That said I really do like watching Richard Gene.

My boys and I were always on the lake in the dark.

    Typical Saturday morning.

    #1 son: Psst... Daddy.... Daddy....Daddy....Daddy....
    #1 Wife: Answer him Alan...
    Me: What?
    #1 son: It's time to go ...
    Me: It's 3:30....
#1 son: Right, ... time to go....
Me: #2 son isn't awake yet..
    #2 son: I'm ready....
Me: Oh, hi, I didn't see you because it's so dark AT 3:30!
    #1 wife: GO!
    .........
    .........
#1 son: It's time to go...

And so it was for many years. Lots of sunrises on the water. Best memories ever.

They're all grown and gone now. I wake up, drink coffee, drag out to the lake by 9:30, catch a few fish (or not) and come home in time to clean fish and and the boat. It ain't the same.

I know to old fellows (89) who go every day. They are all business, tree to tree up and back on the lake. Never seen them smile.

When it stops being fun, I'm going to stop going.

If you can't enjoy fishing his style then don't go fishing with him. It just ruins the day for both of you if you must agonize over his fishing style. When I'm fishing with a friend, that is what I'm doing fishing with a friend. What I catch is always secondary to the fact I am with a friend.

Any day I'm fishing is a good day, regardless of what I catch.

Have no idea where that came from!

I own a Ranger bass boat (in the shop at present for the 90hp), 12' jon boat, 15' Grumman canoe, 15' Grumman v bottom with 50 hp (trying to sell it) and a 10' v bottom. We rent a rowboat (no other boats allowed) on a lake that has excellent quality fish.

When we go on the restricted lake, I'm on the trolling motor and dictate where we fish and how long we fish in any area, constantly calling out depth and structure changes seen on my sonar. (When we fish from his boat, he never refers to his sonar and is not aware how important structure fishing is, blindly casting lures.) In comparison, another angler I've fished with for over 8 years understands structure and is perfectically compatible regarding lure choices and use, both of us watching the other for the signal to change lures when needed.

If you can't enjoy fishing his style then don't go fishing with him. It just ruins the day for both of you if you must agonize over his fishing style.
I think I already stated that.

To clarify further, he has no fishing style, blindly casting lures at the same depth on slack monofilament line that should have been changed over a year ago thereby reducing strike sensitivity and missing hook sets. His line test doesn't match the light lures I give him so lure action suffers. He is stuck on the idea of fishing very early or later after work not convinced by our large catches in the middle of the day. Part of it comes from his aversion to the sun because of how easy his skin burns. (He refuses to wear long sleeve shirts made for higher air temperatures.)

Those willing to learn, learn, versatility aside. Simple as that!

I have clueless friends who spends a lot of money on boats and tackle yet don't catch many fish. I have lots of options yet will go with them when they want as they are good friends and companions. I can put up with most folks as long as they are consistant. some guys will get fixated on doing this one thing and ignore the weather, wind and conditions overall to do what they already have decided and that's fine as I already know it's not going to be a catching day or I will do my thing and catch fish while they struggle. they and their wives especially notice I buy good tackle when it's on sale and catch a lot of fish yet still keep doing what they do buying the expensive stuff. again you know what's up when you go with them and we still have a good time. Insanity is expecting someone like that to do something that makes sense when they rarely do. Going with them or not is your choice.

Great thing about crappie.com? you can find all kinds of new folks to fish with, many of whom have lost their long time fishing partners and want someone new to fish with or are tired of going out with same characters who refuse to adjust and don't catch fish. Often there are guys who have physical limitations, havn't been able to get out who if you are still spry can help them get back out on the water and have fun days.

You said it but you don't seem to understand it. If his lack of style (to you) bothers you so much why do you continue to fish with him. And why have you made a thread about it? He has a right to fish how and when he wants to fish in his boat. He has no obligation to change his ways to conform to your lifestyle or way of fishing when he is in his boat. As you have no obligation to conform to his lifestyle or way of fishing when you are in your boat.

I will say it again. If his way of fishing in his boat bothers you so much then don't fish with him. Or only use your boat when you fish with him. No need to make a thread dissing him because you don't like how he fishes in his boat. Simple as that!
