New lure?

I use hand tied jigs 90% of the time. I have every color combination you can think of but day in and day out a little 1/8 oz gray jig with a red tail catches fish about as good as anything i own.

yum or power grubs aka twistertails. 2" most time on 1/8th plain lead head. I discovered a long time ago that all you need for 70% of the time. I have smaller offerings, like tiny tubes down to micro ice flies and ice floats, for times when they just saying no. lol most times when they don't want to play I switch fish or go home and be productive.

I fish lots of wood verticaly and the 1/8th head helps feel what your doing so you don't hang constantly. and when you do hang you can shake that 1/8th head off the snag 95% of the time. as long as you remain calm and don't set the hook on a branch that is.

bobby garland baby shad plastics are killer too. especially in clear water. I just wish they had scent impregnated in them.

This type of jig good for cast and reel? I have some marabou and tried it a few time. I caught some gills, bass and catfish but never caught crappies, but that when I was very green.
i have found thus far, that stinger shad is the only one that get a good result no matter how I use it, on plain jig head with roadrunner, slow swimming, hop along bottom, dead sticking with bobbers even swim with erratic movements. Some of others might get a good result in one or the other but not all. I tried striking joker and thunder, combination of tubes, combination of crappie magnet and some other odd lures. I guess I can’t stop a bad habit of shopping for new lures. I always read what work for others and if it looks good I’ll buy it lol.

I’m like you I grew up with a bait casting rod in my hands so it just feels natural to me. About a month ago I built a bfs rod and it’s been a blast, although I will say it’s not for everyone. I’m stuck on the BG baby shad myself for the same reasons you are, they just work. Not to say I don’t own a boat full of other baits I have tried but just keep going back.

Do you guys normally try new lure/plastic or stick with what work best? How many different plastic and color do you normally have?

Too much emphasis on lure color IMO. A few will do but only as long as lure speed along with lure action, size and shape match what fish will bite in that place and time. I used to use 3" Sassy Shad grubs for panfish on 1/8 oz jig heads. Sure they caught fish, but I'll never know how many more I could have caught over the years using something else. Same for crankbaits that also have a narrow window of use.

In both examples lure action is dependent on lure speed being retrieved at so many feet per second and in fact a much greater speed than many other lure designs that can display subtle action at near dead stop. The longer a lure is in a fish's strike zone, the greater the chances it getting hit though not still like live bait. The Crappie Magnet like the Slider Grub can be worked very slow but even slower than the Slider, making the Magnet preferable much of the time IMO like the Stinger.

In fact, there are hundreds of lure designs in many colors that work most of the time when you are in an area fish are prone to attack, none being superior to the others but far superior to those that must be retrieved faster. I modify lures 99 % of the time and catch fish on most with photo examples having been posted under my username. Something to think about and stop worrying about color considering how may caught fish in one outing.

Went back there with same setup yesterday and caught a few more. Just realized slider grub float and crappies prefer to rig plastic straight in jig hook. I also caught a few more under bobbers and miss big one, not sure if it was bass or crappie but it pulled drag. Another thing to notice when dark out, the rig without bobbers didn’t get bite at all. I might try again tonight without bobbers.

Well, according to my online Weight and Mass units converter 1g = 1/25 oz.

He is either getting his jig heads out of Asia or Europe.....thus the weight in grams. I get my jig heads out of Japan and really like the gram weighting system. I get them from 1/2 gram up to 3 grams in half gram increments. You can however get them in 1/4 gram increments and even smaller increments with some brands.
