    Default Mobile Fishing app

I am a software developer for my day job and I love fishing. I have tried several fishing apps but haven’t found one that I just can’t live without. I have thought for a while now about building a fishing app. Before I head down that path I thought I would get others thoughts on this idea.

Is there already that one app that is your go to and you don’t see you switching?

Is there something that you would love in the app?

What would an app look like that you think you would love to use?

Thanks for any feedback or suggestions!

There are a few apps out there right now that I can think of. For the record, I don't utilize any of them.

Fish Brain is the one that comes to mind at the moment because it seems that they sponsor just about ever person fishing on YouTube. The issue however with Fish Brain (as with others that I have seen) is that it appears to be geared more towards the youth of today (social media minded) who feel the need to document, gloat, and or capture every single thing they do with their lives and share it for the world to see. I'm sure that in some small way, it helps someone out, unfortunately, the vast majority of fisherman could really care less what "Little Timmie Jig caster" (just made that up) caught on a whopper plopper at two in the afternoon at lake I don't care!

For more years than anyone can count (since the early days of maritime) ship captains have utilizing something called.... wait for it: A Log Book!
It used to be required documentation in order to obtain your captains license. Whether it be for becoming a fishing guide, or running an Iron Ore ship.

Fisherman often utilized these log books to document the date, time, wind, waves, weather, water surface tempurature, down tempurature, trolling speed, baits used, colors used etc...
The MOST important thing to a guy fishing on Lake Michigan was his data. The MORE data you had, the better you were. Eventually, you could pour over your data on any given data and any given time, look back at the wind, the waves, the days that were similar and be able to know exactly where to go, how deep to fish, what colors to utilize, and so on.

So, IF I was making an app, it would be data driven. Make it smart so that the more data you put in to it, the more data that can be taken out of it. As an example, it should speak to the weather. I should have the ability to look at tomorrow and based on the forecast, I should be able to use the app to go back through my data (or data collected by others) and it should be able to give me a starting point. Use X color in X location at X time... A virtual log book that is smart enough to look at history instead of the captain having to go back and look through all of his pages.

And, because I am giving you the keys to the castle here, this same exact thing can be done for hunting. A log book where you log all of your hunting locations, the wind direction, tempurature, weather, and so on (which could also be pulled historically from a weather app. You log what you saw, when you saw it, and any other information. You have the ability to save camera locations and make it smart so that it can store data from those cameras as far as deer movement, the dates, times, weather conditions and so on.

Over time you develope DATA that you can utilize to pick the perfect location based on the time of day, time of year, and the weather conditions. In fact, as the more data is collected, the better the percentage will be of the app telling you WHERE to hunt. I should be able to fire up the app, it looks at the weather, looks back at my data, and it tells me: "based on the weather conditions, the current movement of deer on your property, and your previous history, the best location for the evening sit would be X".

Or, I guess I could continue to be successful doing it the old fashioned way and documenting it in books just like thousands of other hunters and Mariners of years past have done!

I completely agree. All the apps I have used have been very much based on social media. I don’t like that either as it adds a lot of clutter that I don’t care about. I also have thought about the log book. I have wished I would have started one of those years ago. I feel like with today’s technology you should be able to collect a lot of this data automatically for a user. And as you have said as you build your data you could use that to determine what might work on a given day based on history in the past. Glad to hear you thinking along the same lines as where my head was at. Wondering how many others feel this would be valuable?

I use one called My Fishing Advisor. It makes reasonable suggestions on where to fish, structure type, and lure. It is headed in the right direction but still falls far short of a more intuitive approach.

The problem is that if you just take 9 factors say water body, fish type, weather, time of year, water clarity, water temperature, structure, lure color and lure type and assign 4 general options to each you have 36 factors. There are 94,000,000 possible combinations of those 9 factors.

That is I suspect why the social media approach is more effective if less interesting. 1000 people making 4 selections out of 16 possibilities will have tried 1,800,000 combinations. Over the course of a hundred years you can see that in theory every possible combination of an even larger set will have been tried. That is the power of swarm intelligence.

Fishing has always had a degree of passed on "wisdom" to it. Harnessing the power of computers to model that wisdom is an interesting challenge. I have no doubt it can be done with enough research and effort. If you are the first to do it it would make you very wealthy.

    Good luck.

I like the log book idea. However my problem with any data collection is two fold. The time to record, and having the information available when it's time to record it. I like the idea of linking weather to the app. It can then populate temp, wind speed and direction, barometric readings including up, down, steady, etc. Moon phase, sunrise, sunset, high tide, low tide. Lake water surface temp, water clarity, lake depth above sea level. Water column depth and how deep I was catching them on that spot, gps coordinates for that spot. Fishing method, jig colors, live artificial or combination. That's a lot of data to capture, anything to expedite that process would be the cat's meow. Photos linked to the log entry will help capture jig combination and colors.
All that detail takes time to capture and record. Some would find that too be too much detail, the ability to hide/unhide data would be helpful.

Already ahead of you on the Access Database type of product. That is what I built for myself about 10 years ago when I first came up with the hunting data idea.
You are correct about data collection though. like anything else, a kid gets a new toy, he plays with it, and then realizes that it is simply too much work and gives up on it. I was actually watching something about FishBrain last night and after about 30 seconds all I could think of was, wow, how much effort do I have to put in to this thing in order to show someone that I caught a fish here!

Being able to set hotkeys for yourself based on baits you often utilize might be one way to streamline the data collection.

One factor that I don't account for however: I fish to get away from my cellphone. I carry it for my emergencies but never answer it, seldom look at it, and rarely care that it is there! I'm not one to rely on a cell phone so it might not be a great feature for me but...

I hear ya on the cell phone. I use it to take pics while on the water. Otherwise it's dead to me.
I've gone round and round on the data I want to capture. My current method. Memory. About ready to delete every waypoint and only add a waypoint if I limit out on a spot. Keep it simple stupid. The KISS method.

I use diaro for logging information. Just remember to add the days that you strike out as well.
