Been running Shimano's for the past decade and usually buy a new one a year. Last winter was the first time I cleaned and lubricated them. Never had an issue with the drag, or anything for that matter.
I own both, and use both. Both are great feeling reels that are super smooth and lightweight. I've had pfluegers wear out, but not after A LOT of abuse. I've had every single sedona/sienna 1000fd that I have purchased break on me... bail springs, every single one (probably 15 or so by now). Most don't last a year, but they are really nice reels so I keep going through them. I do prefer the shimano over the pfluegers as far as feel and use, but the 1000 series just do not hold up. The 500 and 2500 are completely different though, I have never had one of those wear out a spring.. Most of my crappie rods have 500fd siennas and sedonas, with my main jig casting rods having 1000fd for better balance. A few of my walleye rods have presidents and purists, one UL rod still has a president sz 20 that i use for bluegill.
So, I prefer the shimanos but will and do use both.

Quick, someone teach me how to fish so I can win this tournament!!!
Try the Pflueger Summit. same as President but composite body.
I run 2 Shimano Sahara’s and I don’t think any other reel I have ever used comes close to them . The 2 Pfluegers I do own are both broke and they be hanging with all the other broke reels on the garage wall .
This said my bass pro staff bud has a new Pflueger he got for me he wants me to try , so I will give it just what all the rest get in the way of serious abuse and ZERO maintenance and see if it holds up to the hardcore treatment I dish out to angling equipment.
I do own a few old shake my spears that still work well , but they are mostly at rest these days

I used to be a Shimano fan and have a Sedona, but their quality seems to have fallen off. I bought a Pflueger President baitcasting reel last year for Muskie fishing and love it. So this spring i bought 2 Pflueger President spinning reels for pan fishing to replace 2 Shimano's and so far they are great.
Shimano IX great reals, trouble free.. Bought some Pflueger Lady Presidents for long lining, very smooth reels but notice the handles work loose. Maybe need a little locktite.
I've got a dozen or so President reels, the smallest model made. The one's I own are built more sturdy than the few Shimano reels I own. I like both, but definitely think the President reels are better quality.
My ten year old will throw them down on the rocks after about 5 casts with no bites and that's where you really want the President. Just a solid, well built reel.

I prefer the Pflueger but the Sedona is ok!
For the money, you'll be hard pressed to do better than the President.
go with the 30 size..will cast better than the smaller ones
