BTW, the lure shown is one of the best I've used anywhere anytime!

After hundreds of hours of vertical jiggin I've narrowed my massive jig body selection down to just a few. It's personal preference and what you have confidence in. Use what works for you and get the filet knife ready!Name: 20190331_195549_resized.jpg

Bet you get some nice fillets from those!

My challenge is finding many different soft plastic designs that catch pretty much all species. Fishing with just a few would be for me like using live bait only.

I catch alot of wipers and white bass when crappie jiggin. I usually use chartreuse nibbles or sauce. When after walleye etc. I use bigger jigs and tip them with worms or dead minners. At the docks - boats coming in give me their minnows and I freeze them to use later. I sprinkle them with garlic powder and tip jigs with them or use them for catfish.

I prefer jigs on most trips "but" I also know what they eat when we're not there .

I prefer a soft plastic stinger tail in two inches.

As with any bait/lure, the angler must consider how much water he/she wants to cover. IMO live bait limits that to one place longer whereas lures annually cover 1000x more water at different depths and speeds. Granted, I've found minnows better at times ice fishing but not always. My partner and I caught 40 crappie in one area after cutting a large circle of holes and then going from hole to hole using 2" tubes and did so in a short period of time before the sun set.

I haven't bought a minnow in years and usually do as well as most on the lake any given day. That said, I have many times seen others nearby catch crappie before me with minnows, then I have to go to work and figure out how to catch fish with the artificials.

Where I live, you can't fish with minnows, so plastics win here...

Used these Monday rigged on a 1/24 ball head jig:

Caught 106 fish: mostly gills but also crappie and bass in 2' on the flats down to 6' off steep shore drops. Those fish struck like they wanted to destroy the intruders ! (Color didn't matter.)
