Default Heating jigs to soften shafts

Has anyone tried heating jig shafts with a flame to soften their temper and make them easier to remove when snagged?

Maybe if you use a super focused small butane flame and just focus on the bend of the hook you could do it without melting the lead. You won't be able to remove "some" of the temper, its all or nothing really. So your hooks will bend extremely easy, you may even bend them straight on the hookset. Best thing to do is just buy them already made to use around snags. Here are some Hook Set Tackle :: Hook Set Tackle :: New Extra Lite Wire Jig / Leadhead I'm not sure if any forum sponsers sell them, I haven't seen any.

Just bend them a couple of times in the bend and it will soften them up worth a try. I have a buddy who does this and says it works.

Just so you are aware, when buying jigs. Light wire and Extra-Light wire are not the same. Light wire is what we see as standard crappie jigs, with say eagle claw 570 hooks.. Just your standard run of the mill crappie jig is a light wire hook, the extra-light wire are the ones that will bend real easily when you are snagged. They are hard to find! If you are familiar with eagle claw aberdeen minnow hooks, the 202 would be the light wire and the 202EL would be the extra light.

Litewirehooker, or Curtis, sells what you’re after. Try them and I think you’ll be happy. I use them when I need one that pulls free in real grabby stuff.

My Dad taught me to do that 40 years ago when I was a teenager. I sometimes long line in and around tree tops. So I heat mine up to remove the temper. Otherwise, I’m tying a jig on constantly. After pulling one loose 4 or 5 times they get even weaker though. Expect to lose Bass, but when I’m focused on Crappie I don’t mind. Except when my wife lost a bass, kind of wanted to see her fight that one in.
