Default Long lining versus spider rigging

Is it fair to say that you would start out SR while water is still cold and move to LL after water warm some? Live in IA and still have ice on right now. I understand you can SR anytime, but question is more towards can it be to cold to LL?( Fish are not aggressive enough)

Any One have any advise? Can the water be too cold to long line and if so what water temp would you start at?
    Thanks for your help

I long line all winter. Last time out water was in the upper 30's and I did well. Really, unless fish are shallow spawning or tight to vertical structure long line trolling will catch fish. The same can probably be said for slow trolling, but that's not my cup of tea.

Well you don't have to long line fast, you can long line at 0.2 or so and catch plenty of fish when the water is cold. I know a little bit about ice out fish.. and 99% of the time right after ice out they suspend up high or go shallow to wind blown shorelines on warm days where the water is warmest. They go back to "normal" moods at about 48-50 water temp and that is when I start trolling them... until about 55-60 water temp, then im back shallow chasing spawners.

Of course you can spider rig or long line at any water temp and catch fish, not all fish play by the rules

I prefer to Spider Rig spring and fall, and long line in summer.
