    Default Etiquette on the water

Like everyone's input. As the population increases so does the number of folks on the water. I've said for years before you are able to purchase a boat you should have to take a state test on how to run your craft as well as etiquette on the water. A while back my partner and I were fishing a community hole and had been there for over an hour. Another boat with 2 guys arrived and went upstream of us about 100 yds. We continued to catch fish and every so often I'd look over my shoulder to see them rubber necking and chattering. After about 30 minutes I looked again and they had slowly eased down to with-in 20 yards of us. Matter of fact the guy in the back his next cast was with in 5 ft of me. My classic response that I have used is to stand up and ask them if we need to move. Most of the time they will say no and say that they are sorry and sometime will leave. Yes all of the lake is everyones but just wondered how most folks on the forum think when this happens. We are also live in a time where 50% of folks have carry permits and things could get greasy. Share your thoughts Tenncrappie.

Fishing is a SPORT. Requires courtesy and common sense to others enjoying the same activity.

In an another sport "offsides" is a penalty. Just thro a flag at them and tell them they must move back 10 yards Etiquette on the water

We have a lot of tidal creeks and rivers here on the coast. The tubers and jet ski are re are most Rudd, and a long with our fellow bass guys. I'll be as low trolling and they come by at full throttle. Some of them will throttle back but for the most part they think they own the water. Just because they have that glitter boat don't give them nothing special. Two weeks ago I almost got ran over along with a kayaker. By a glitter boat. Puts a bad taste in my mouth. I have a small boat, I am very courteous, always on the look out for others. Don't horn in in there spots till they move away. Some people just ruin it for others.

Out here the bass guys are probably the worst - especially local clubs doing tournaments. During the summer it's lake lice & skiers (at least they aerate the water). Most of my fishing time is trolling - because of the fishing vultures...

For myself it all depends on the situation.....I like to try to be as courteous as possible on the water with giving people plenty of space to fish and at the same time I also enjoy having my own space as well.At times especially during the warmer months it gets harder to get a whole lot of room to yourself simply because the lake gets so darn crowded with the rec boat crowd flying around the main lake and anchoring in alot of the coves, creeks, etc. and hanging out.Over the years I have learned us fisherman on this lake must be alittle more wllling to deal with each other being closer,of coarse this doesnt mean sitting right on top of each other or casting 5 ft from someones boat.I fish because I enjoy it,I refuse to bicker or even worse fight over a brushpile or laydown all the while setting a bad example of how to act to my kids as at least one of them is usually with me.If someone needs a spot to fish that bad then they can have it,I got plenty of others to go check out.

I haven't run into that much around here.

And as for the CCW laws, one must remember (if you're fishing on a COE lake):

By Federal Law and COE Regulations it is illegal to carry a firearm (Unless Hunting on Land the Corps allows hunting on) on the U.S. Corps of Engineers property. This includes the waters of lakes that their dams form and the property surrounding the lake unless there is a private home on the lake.

And even though KY is an "open carry" state ... it's still illegal to open carry on COE lakes/property.

I don't think it's worth getting shot over a fishing spot, or shooting someone over one ... so, if someone encroaches on me when I'm fishing a spot & catching fish, and they don't engage in friendly conversation & ask if it's OK to fish "around me, on by me, or in the same general area" and just barge in and begin fishing ... then I'd probably just let them have the spot (after I hammer down the 90HP Merc & wash out that particular spot, that is )

I agree the bass guys seem to be the worse. Personally I never try to wake anyone with my kayak...

Hate to break it to ya,but taking a class really doesn’t mold a persons personality. My state requires a class for anyone driving a motorized boat, trust me some of the folks I fish around have no business steering a boat, but hey, they took the test.Im not sure the problem can ever be resolved,I try and scurry my well marked kayak to my fishing spot, most often sticking close to the shoreline as much as possible.
There are many locations on most waters that I can skim my kayak into that the big bottoms can’t reach, these places offer better fishing in most cases.I have also found out that when squatters sidle into my honey hole,I develope a healthy dose of patience, to date,I’ve won every battle.
