    Default "It's Just Getting Scary"

I enjoy new technology but theirs a point when I think it may take the fun out of fishing. In fact their may even be a point when it actually ruins fishing, at least as we know it. We all claim to love to catch fish and we do, or do we.... isn't it really the fishing part that we love, after all any of us can go down to our local grocer and get "catch" all of the fish we want and most likely for a lot less money.

No, I truly believe it's the fishing we love; the planning, the stalking, selecting the perfect bait, making that perfect presentation feeling that thump, pushing or pulling your offering all the while you have a multiple rods spread out.

Now I own the best technology that I can afford from rods, reels locators and such, not against it in the least bit even excited about the new LiveScope but that said I got to fish with a highly respected and well known gentleman in the industry the other day who pointed out to me one of his concerns with some of this new stuff, in fact as he put it "it's just getting scary".

Example, everyone knows the true reason that there is a bazillion colors of jigs, it's to catch the fishermen not the fish. Also, if you can find feeding fish then you can usually catch'em and depending on the water color your fishing you only need a few lure colors. Can you imagine how devastating that could be for the lure manufactures if you folks figure out you don't need all of those colors?

We are now seeing things that one could not have imagined just a few short years ago. Though some of the things are currently made for blue water it's just a matter of time till they down size to include fresh water as well. Things like the SpyFish which is a camera attached to your fishing line that lets you see "real-time" video of your lure in action or the Trekking portable casting fish locator. Then theirs the new robotic or Artificial Intelligence lures like the Animated Lures which is programmed to swim on its own, and just no telling whats in the pipeline but you can bet the pipes are full.... I don't know maybe it is getting scary!

That's 1 of the reason's I like watching Richard Gene on YouTube, on some of his videos he leaves the boat at home and still catches fish. And don't call me stupid, I carry a phone that knows everything and I know how to use it!"It's Just Getting Scary""It's Just Getting Scary""It's Just Getting Scary"

Some boats have better technology than submarines a few short years ago, or even the first few lunar landing craft. Much of the "stuff" used today is an idol, is obsolete in days after manufacture, and feeds an insatiable appetite that requires more and more. That tendency is in us all. I know I have seen it in myself and have decided to start fasting. Richard Gene is a good example of a minimalist in many ways, yet even he can have his head turned by some things.

Thank you for a very thought provoking post. I often fall into the trap of, “If I only had _____ I would be set!”
I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

I catch enough fish without a $2600 camera or live scope, I use HB and Ray Marine 7" fish finders. Everybody to their own, though. I agree with this post! Thanks,

Yep, unless your the guy at work who has gone on 2 trips and never cast a lure cause his side image did not show any fish. I have a Hook 7 on my boat and rarely use it unless trolling for speed. I do use it offshore for spots and locating the reefs and fish on them. But cant see it from bow when fishing down a bank, but it's not sidescan so that wouldnt matter anyway.

I agree Lonnie. My grandfather could look at a place he had never fished. After 5-10 minutes say they are right over there. Walk over and fill the stringer if they were feeding. I know that he would say that this technology is not fishing, it's farming. Run your fancy equipment over to them and start harvesting. Lol. He always had his opinion.

Well im now 83 years old. In 1970 I went along with 2 friends on a fishing trip to Quebec.
They had been there before, one of them many times. We had an Indian guide to get us around, but he actually knew very little about fishing. We trolled mostly, using lures like Rebels or other swimming type lures.
Problem was the water being sort of coffee colored (like Florida) you couldn't tell how deep it was.
So we couldn't keep the boats in the proper depth to keep the lures from snagging the bottom.
We only fished 3 days, and probably wasted a day of it getting lures unsnagged. So on my wish list was a green square box portable fish finder made by Lowrance. It worked the same as all the others back then you might see even on offshore boats.
Simply a flasher type that showed depth, and static lines that could be caused by almost anything, but the most important thing was knowing the depth.
Anyway there was an outdoor writer at the time who wrote articles in as I recall Outdoor Life, but maybe another, and it makes no difference anyway under the heading, (Starns At Large).
The main issue imop was that people like him were running around at large to begin with, because he was a total idiot.
In one of his monthly articles, he predicted that the day would soon come when the fish would be in his exact words (wiped out) due to jazzbos like me, using these modern box type devices to locate fish, then catch all they wanted.
I guess ive never been smart enough to learn how to really use these things. lol

I don't get to spend as much time fishing as I'd like, usually 1/2 day at a time. Technology for me eliminates wasted time fishing where there are no fish. It's that simple. Driving 2.5 hours to fish 3-4 hours is something I do often, good electronics helps use my time wisely. All that being said, things are getting a bit obnoxious. I recently purchased a Helix 10 SI/DI/Mega, while talking to the sales guy, he showed me another brand unit that actually was able to hook up to Netflix......really!
