My understanding is the bbjp is even lighter then the cc’s. The prostaffs would be stiffer. I just got into slow trolling this summer and bought 14 foot caps and Coleman’s and really like them.

I’ve used Southern Crappie Rods for years and have swung several 2 pound crappie over the sides when fun fishing. With clients I’m betting 90% of their fish. When a Crappie with a mouth the size of a tennis ball surfaces, in gets netted 100% of the time.

Some questions :

How much (if any) weight are you using ??
Which "trolling" method are you using ??
What size fish are you catching ??
What does the depth the fish are in have to do with lifting them out of the water ??

I have a couple of C/C 14' rods that I Push jigs/cranks with, and a PST, and the biggest difference (to me) is the C/C rods are a little more limber and bend farther under the same amount of weight.

Also, bare in mind that the C/C rods are primarily a Spider Rigging rod, hence the more limber action (to show lighter bites).

I spider rig, rarely use over 1/2 ounce of lead, we catch fish over two pounds quite often, and deeper depths just make it a little tougher to lift fish with the amount of bend the C&Cs have.

I use Southern Crappie Rods. You can lift a 2 lb crappie in the boat with a standard rod. You can slang a 21/2 lber in the boat with the 2 oz trolling rods in 14 or 16 ft. I usually net those bigger fish I hate to loose one when a hook come out

OK .... but I still don't understand how the depth you're catching fish in has anything to do with lifting them out of the water. But, that's neither here nor there considering the size fish. And that little bit of weight doesn't amount to much in the greater scheme of things.

I will tell you this - when the only rod over 10' I had was a 14' PST, I was catching fish like this one :



Pushing jigs down in Tenn, these fish would bury that 14' rod in the water nearly halfway up the length of the rod. That particular trip I didn't have a long handled net, actually I didn't have ANY net. But, I lift landed all the fish ... even this Slab. What you can't see or determine in this picture is the fact that this fish is NOT being held up by my hand on the line. It's swinging freely on the near vertical 14' PST rod, and my thumb is just against the line trying to keep the fish steady for the picture. Had it been a C/C rod, I'd have probably done the same thing for the picture ... but, I may have regretted it.

Around here, many use 14-20ft rods to Push cranks & 2-4oz trolling weights. I've used my two C/C 14' rods to Push jigs & cranks & 1.5oz weights w/o problems (or a long handled net). This year, however, I will have said long handled net along on my trips.

Maybe I got a bad batch of PST 12 footers. I bought 8 12 ft 3 years ago from grizzly jig . I have 3 left. I broke one in Florida 2 weeks ago while lifting a 12 inch crappie in the boat. I sold 4 to my fishing partner When I first got the 8 rods. He has none left. I have replaced the tips on the 3 I have left and I’m getting ready to buy another tip for the one I just broke. I generally use the net on larger crappie. But sometimes you have two or three rods going down at the same time. You grab a rod and go to lift the 12-14 inch fish in the boat and snap. All of these rods have broken on fish. One was a 4 pound smallmouth made a hard pull at the boat the others were all on crappie lifting in the boat. I like the rods for trolling they have backbone. But the tips I’m not fond of. Im switching to another rod. I have the Sam Heaton jig rods and they are great not one issue.
