A lot depends on what kinds of presentations you normally use. And if you are a boat angler or limited to the shorelines. No way to answer your question without more details on your situation there. IL is a big state; some areas may be iced up this weekend, while other may be open. In either case, the majority of northern crappie are going to probably be located deep - in water between 15' - 30' - setting up in their winter holding patterns.

Vertical jigging and/or drifting (if you have a boat) will probably net you the biggest return. Keep an eye on your electronics and do a lot of scouting about before setting up any presentation. Once you have them located, it should not be difficult to catch crappie, yellow perch and bluegill. Good Luck!

outside temps. don't normally dictate patterns on fish . unless it effects the water temps.
as far north as you are I imagine your fish are in a winter pattern for the most part .
deep or shallow and right under masses of bait fish trying to stay warm .
mouths of river or creeks would be a good place to look if there is a drop off or deep water near them or in them .

Don’t hesitate to check your shallow brush spots. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

If you catch it at the right time, the far back ends of creeks can have a bunch of fish hanging around the channel edges in 8-10fow in the Fall. And if you miss that opportunity, move out a little deeper & find the brush & submerged trees. That seems to be the normal way of things around these parts, anyway. Of course, that's under "normal" conditions and can be limited or completely thwarted by weather events changing the water levels & temps quicker/slower than normal.
