I have 3 big birds on my boat . I have had good luck with mine . Have heard complaints on the Onix . The Birds are easiest to operate for myself , have friends with Lowrance that say mine are much easier to use .
Check the electronics forum.... I just shared some info someone else posted on Facebook about a fix for some of the problems with the new update.

Bo, I don't get one red cent from Humminbird but have sold dozens of their units. Clients get on my boat and watch my former 1199HD and now my Helix 12 Mega and the first things out of their mouth is "My electronics picture doesn't look like that!!" I then proceed to give them a tutorial on what they can see from my Humminbird when set up properly. Of course I have an ace up my sleeve---Rickie (rnvinc) gets in my boat regularly to play with my Humminbirds and try new settings and such. MY only request to him is to leave it so I can turn it on and let it do its magic. Since I got my Helix 12 Mega a few months ago I been burning up waypoints at an alarming rate, all while fishing water I have fished for years but never seen all the fish holding structure that has been there all along--unseen till now.
I require a unit that I can turn on, change screens a couple of times and it will open up a world of fish possibilities. MY Birds and LakeMaster map cards do that for me. I have absolutely NEVER considered any other brand. When I rig my new Bay Pro in the spring it will have 2 shiny new Helix 12 Mega units on it.

My 2¢:
I've always had birds. Got used to them and never thought about anything else since I was used to their format.
I think all of the units out now are pretty good and equal in performance between the respective comparable models.
Kinda of like trucks, chevy, dodge, ford, toyo, etc. All good, just comes down to personal preference and what you're used to.

When I got my Boat about 15 yrs ago the sonar on it was a cheap Eagle... It always showed fish, even when none. When I put a A bird 386 on the TM it showed just how Bad the Eagle truely was, It was only good for how deep the water was. About 5 years later I got another 386 CI and thought I would wait a while Hoping the Price of Map cards might come down... It never did --- this unit would not mark waypoint ,, said No card in slot. I only Recently found out this unit should mark a waypoint without having any card in the Slot.. Sending this old unit in for repair is not worth the Hassle... I just went On Line at E-Bay and bought a New Bird -- Helix 7 GPS/ CI Chirp Gen2 New saving almost $200 That should be here the middle of next week -- The savings will get me a Ram Mount and Navionics card.. Not Lake Master, because Lake D'Arbonne is not on their card,,, Now I am Glad I waited for Prices to go down on cards because SI did not exist. with 2D sonar finding the exact spot on a waypoint was sometimes a challange I know I will be happy with the New SI unit, I can find Bream Beds

I had the hummingbird 9 but now have the hook 9. Miss the bird. Easier to use in my opinion and a little better pics.
I just reread my post and saw where I had typed CI ,, it should have been SI
