    Default Noisy Trolling Motor

I longline troll jigs for crappie at about 1.0 mph using a Minn Kota Ultrex trolling motor. After two days of solid trolling and listening to my trolling motor rattle, I really want to fix it. Sounds like there is a rattle vibration noise inside the head of the trolling motor. I can change directions and sometimes it stops. Any one else have this problem on a Ultrex or Terrova trolling motor? How did you fix it? Sure is annoying after about 16 hours of trolling!

Sure it's not cavitation? I have an Ultrex and she runs smooth as silk, what length shaft do you run and do you long-line off the back of the boat?

I have the shorter 45” on my Ranger 188. I long line from the front of the boat. Never could steer from the rear. I almost hit a buoy doing that. LOL

Lol, I hear ya, was just curious if the prop wasn't getting bite. How long have you been using the Ultrex and have you contacted Minn Kota about the issue?

Idk but do you have a transducer cable running down the outside of the shaft? Sometimes they can make just enough vibration going through the water you think it's the motor. Add a couple zip ties if you do and maybe that will help

I have the Ultrex on a ranger with smooth operation. I would suggest checking to see if your prop has been damaged. A damaged prop can cause vibration. Also take you prop off(make sure to cut power first) and check that nothing has wrapped shaft, I.e. line or weeds.

Here is a YouTube video. Now I have never done this myself so do at your own risk. Although I would like to know if others have done this with success.

If the noise changes with steering, my guess is the mount is loose. Carefully deploy the motor while at the house and run thru the speeds briefly and listen for the vibration if it ain't there it ain't the TM.Then look under the TM for gaps. Rock it around a little. Are isolation pads installed?

I had noise sounding like gears not meshing well. Had a Minn Kota service center virtually rebuild the TM including a new control head (still will not hold better than 10’, and yes, it is the new model). They also had to replace the deploy and retrieve mechanism on my Ulterra. The techies are tremendously good, warranty is excellent but just which it would spot lock like advertised.
